European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 17, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse People who attach names to their automobiles Are making a big mistake it May sound cute at the time to Christen your car Fred. Old faithful or Orlow. But from that moment on it takes on human qualities you can never again be objective about its place in your life or its future As for Ever gelling rid of it. Forget it it s like ruling your Mother adrift at sea on a floating iceberg i prefer a car that knows its place which is anywhere i want it to be yet i have known people to climb out of a warm bed at Midnight when they hear Thunder and say. Good grief. I better get Liz in the garage where it s dry " a Friend of mine mothers her car As though she is raising a Virgin near a Navy base she will allow no one near it because no one understands and appreciates it As she Dotis her husband drove it once and when he inadvertently stripped the gears she leaned Over turned Oft the motor and shouted you will never violate Viola again get out1" the scary part is that cars sense this they become like spoiled children self entered demanding and confident. They can Idle Raggedy at the traffic Light and die and their owner will forgive them for it. They can refuse to turn Over first thing in the morning and so what they can pig out on Oil and gasoline and still have a place in the garage they re not stupid did t their master give them personalized License plates cover their dashboard with fur. Attach a plastic Flower on their antenna7 they could stall every night in traffic and their owner would still make payments on sheepskin Seal covers from new zealand i named my kids and pets but i Drew the line at my car yet i used the same formula with them love and fear neither kids Pels nor car knew what i was going to do next just when they thought they were secure. I d mention Selling them they were never quite sure when i was kidding and when i was t my husband had a car he considered to be a member of the family he called it Max. Max should have been owned by a garage Mechanic there was t a week that Max did t Ping sputter rattle or cough something always dragged on the ground or needed fixing under the Hood. I figured out once that Max alone was supporting five Auto parts dealers who had retired to Hilton head. When you talked about unloading Max my husband would become physically ill. He knew Max would give him 100.000 Miles actually Max did. But not without a Price on the Day my husband traded Max i told him that he was crazed with the humanness of that stupid car he denied it you Don t understand. Edna he said that s Erma i corrected tc19b9ermibomb Maze s Silky Silky soul by Hillel Italie associated press Rankie Beverly likes soul the old fashioned Way that Means romantic i m ballads and everybody say yeah dance songs the Way they made them at motown and stax. For the founder and Leader of Maze it s also an attitude an article of Faith with a spirit rooted in gospel and rhythm and blues. This is a group that still believes in the Power of social statements As shown by the anti apartheid Mandela off its new album Silky soul today such thinking risks being called old fashioned. That kind of Faith you re talking 60s, hippie generation said Beverly laughing. It s missing and i personally feel bad about that. We grew up in the 60s we re sex hippies. This thing going on today All this violence and me. Me me instead of us Beverly and the band he started nearly 20 years ago have had to contend with a lot of them notably radio stations that have kept the group s numerous singles off pop formats Maze remains unknown to most radio listeners Twenty years ago the smooth can t get Over you might have been a hit period and not simply the smash on the Black charts that it was. All the radio reports and sales it s awfully confusing to me said Beverly. This separation is bad. People say i m an r and b artist. Art should t be confined it s challenging to see if we can make a difference if we can make people hear us " Maze began in the Early 1970s As raw soul at a time when motown and stax had Given Way to the funkier More socially conscious sly and the family Stone the sound of Philadelphia producer oriented groups such As the spinners the stylistics and the o jays was poised to take Over the charts. We weren t part of that said Beverly. We were a self contained band. We were More like sly and Santana. Producers like Kenny Gamble Cut a few records on me but nothing happened. Don t believe it was the fact they weren t Good producers. I just was t in that Mold " so they headed for California and starved group members became frustrated and some dropped out. You Start weeding out who s really a part of the thing Beverly said. Eight of us went out there and within the first two or three months four of those cats came Back to Philly. We got another Bass player and kept the band going and developed. We were fortunate enough to pick up Guys who were pretty much like we were somebody that was raised they eventually signed with Capitol in 1976 and the hits on some charts kept on coming but despite a string of Gold albums including Golden time of Day and inspiration Beverly was unhappy. An idealist always he saw no reason to go Only for the Gold. Why not Platinum after a double live album in 1986. Maze left Capitol and signed with Warner Bros. Records. On the title track of Silky soul Beverly pays tribute to the late Marvin Gaye remembering a Singer who thrived on the romantic soul and protest songs that Maze also records. He certainly was the last of those super duper Chick killers Beverly laughed. Teddy Pendergrass was on the Way but he never really got where Marvin a sense of Community another old fashioned 60s value has kept Maze together. Personalities people raised right Asho says about family background make a difference and so does the music allowing voices to be heard in and out of the studio. The singing groups seem to hang longer than the self contained bands he said. Those Are just like the Rock groups. The Ohio players and the commodores they All dwindled away.
