To los Angeles times Syndicate and creators Syndicate Page 11 letters military haircut regulations explained according to army regulation 670-1 there arc Many current stylish men s hair styles that May or May not infringe upon army regulations. What bothers me is that various leaders have their own interpretations of a 670-1 that differs Between each company and battalion. Many soldiers ask Why they can t Wear their hair a certain Way while soldiers right next door seem to have no restrictions. Different strokes for differ ent leaders right wrong. If we Are to fight As a whole then let s come together As a whole pertain ing to ars not separate interpretations Between leaders because of certain pet peeves. If the military is going to set standards then let s enforce them no matter what rank or unit a Soldier May be from. This is a big problem on my base. Each battalion has its own hair styles. Some arc within the rugs and others arc extremely unauthorized. Name withheld Kirch guns West Germany editor s note maj. Flynn l. Andrew adjutant he 3rd armoured division replies from time to time military haircut policies Are spotlighted this occurs As new styles become fashionable in civilian life and inevitably appear in our armed forces. Army policy has changed Over the years from specifying very detailed criteria to a set of More general rules that Are applied to the Many hair styles we have today. The intent however remains the same every sol Dier will present a neat and Well groomed appear Ance. The army s Standard for a male or female haircut is found in a 670-1, Wear and appearance of army uniforms and insignia. This regulation can not be supplemented by any level of command without prior approval from he department of the army. The army policy directs commanders to apply a set of criteria in judging the acceptability of a hair style. Basic criteria Are As follows hair must be kept neat and clean. Extreme or fad style haircuts Are not authorized. Dyes and tints must be natural hair colors. For males hair on top of head will be neatly groomed. Length and bulk of the hair will not be excessive or present a ragged unkempt or extreme appear Ance. Hair will present a tapered appearance and when combed not fall Over the cars or touch the Back of the neck. Sideburns will be neatly trimmed the base is clean shaven horizontal line that is not flared and not extend below the lowest part of the exterior ear opening. In All cases the bulk or length of hair will not interfere with the Normal Wear of headgear or the protective mask. For females hair will be neatly groomed. Length and bulk of hair will not be excessive or present a ragged unkempt or extreme appearance. Hair will not fall Over the eyebrows or extend below the Bottom Edge of the Collar. Hair styles will not interfere with proper wearing of military headgear or the protective mask. Our regulation docs not specify in pictures or words the acceptability of each hair style. Com Manders must apply the criteria outlined above and judge each style accordingly. This leaves some room for different interpretations especially those concerning fad or extreme style it is commander s business to ensure thai regulations arc applied fairly and do not differ Between units. I urge you to take your Case to your Chain of command. Use the open door policy if but let the Chain of command work. You May not agree with the ultimate decision on the acceptability of a particular hair style but you will Sec a fair application of the army regulation.
