Support for the idea comes from two studies conducted by Brown an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Washington in Seattle and Kevin Mcgill of Southern methodist University in Dallas. Their work appears in the december Issue of the journal of personality and social psychology. One study included 261 students in grades 7 through 11 at a girls school in the los Angeles area and the other focused on 107 students at Southern methodist. Researchers measured the students self esteem by showing them a list an asking them which of the major life events listed had occurred to them Over the previous 12 months. The list included such events As breaking up with a loved one or getting a new one 9r losing or adding a family member. The participants also indicated whether they considered the event to be positive negative or Neutral. In the girls school study students were asked four months later about illnesses they developed since completing the Survey. For students with Low self esteem the More positive events they had recorded the More colds sore throats sinus and ear infections and laryngitis they tended to report during the follow up period. For students with High self esteem the More positive events they had in the previous year the fewer diseases they reported during the follow up period. The Southern methodist study also found Simi Lar results when it looked at How often the Stu dents visited the health Center for physical illness.
