Matthew Broderick is the Headliner As col. Robert Gould Shaw the White 25-year-old son of wealthy Boston abolitionists and a Veteran of the bloody Battle at Antietam. He is chosen to command the new unit. But the Black volunteers Are the ones who carry this Liloni. Denzel Washington is trip a runaway slave full of hatred for everyone including himself Morgan Freeman is Rawlins an older runaway who rises to the rank of sergeant major in the eight months it takes to train the unit newcomer Andre Braugher is Thomas Searles an educated Northern Black who grew up with Shaw and Ihmi Kennedy is shafts a stuttering Field hand who amazes everyone with his marksmanship. The movie is jammed with moments that will put a Lump in your Throat. Director de Zwick who pilots to s thirty something knows How to manipulate audience emotion but he does it so Well that you Don t care. The film almost compels you to take Pride in the achievements of these men not Only As Blacks but As americans. Broderick was generally panned in the states for not having enough Charisma to carry the film. Too Young too lightweight too indecisive the critics said. But i think that View misses the Point Shaw actually was Young relatively inexperienced and at times unsure of himself and his Mission. So to my mind Broderick nailed it Down just right. Among the troops Washington deserves particular Praise. One scene in which Shaw has trip whipped for attempted desertion is awesome As the two lock eyes and silent tears Roll Down the former slave s face. The incredibly intense Climax is based on the real 54th s Rush on the South Carolina rebel stronghold of fort Wagner one of the most impregnable earthworks Ever built. The unit May have lost half its number at fort Wagner and it May have failed to take the fort but the Gallant 54th had achieved something a lot More important than Victory. Its soldiers had proved not Only their own Worth but also the character of their race to a sceptical nation. Glory is the rare War movie that will have people heading for the local Library and for that reason alone it s a Triumph. Toss in the film s Many technical merits and you have a 31/2 Star history lesson Worth every second of its two hour running time. It s a reminder that however horrific War is there Are some things that simply must be fought for. Anyone interested in learning More about the real life heroics of Shaw and the 54th should try to get a copy of the excellent Book upon which glory is partially based one Gallant Rush by Peter Burchard. It s published by St. Martin s press in softcover for $9.95.�~�~ stripes Magazine 23
