Page 11 letters i would like to comment on the decisions of the command sergeants major commanders and first sergeants of the importance of set scores when it comes time to determine if a specialist is eligible to appear before the e-5 promotion Board. It things that should be taken into consideration Are situations such As when a specialist makes a Low score on his or her set since this Soldier has not worked his or her primary military occupational specially pos since Ait advanced initial training. Or if a Soldier is m that situation and is Only Given a two week notice prior to the exam. Is it fair to that Soldier who has served diligently in As to army t0 8>ve such importance to the set score this is taking under consideration that this Soldier has a clean record. Should he or she be denied the right of advancement and yet this Young service member is under the command of a command sergeant major who is Between the age of 33 and 39 years old. The Junior enlisted teels that the command sergeant major must have been granted some sort of waiver to have excelled at such an Early age. Is it a question of favouritism what is right what is fair in today a army you have the Junior enlisted who receive pats on the Back for menial things that Are not career related. Or you have the Junior enlisted who has to accept the fact that he or she is made to do things that Are not Mission essential related and because of his hard boiled command can to seem to receive pats on the Back. This Means even losing a Chance to appear before a promotion Board due to the army system technicality a for doing what is expected of him by his superiors standards As Well As by his standards. I feel that those who have excelled and who have what it takes to help others Excel should Stop and take a look up from the Book and Start to understand what the pages Are really saying. A name withheld ludwigs Burg West Germany note a Usa eur command sergeant major George l. Horvath Iii replies this Soldier raises some Points that need clarification. First i agree that we army unit should be giving our soldiers More than two weeks notice of an impending set test. That is something i can fix. I will also state though that All soldiers share in the responsibility of keeping themselves prepared and ready to be tested. We All know that the set test comes around once a year. Some Good news the army is in the process of revamping the set test. Some of the changes under consideration Are a every military occupational specially mos will have a test. A it will be a written test. A it will be Given once a year. A it will be equipment focused. By that i mean you will be tested on the equipment you use in the unit you Are assigned to. If for example you Are an artillery staff sergeant in the 3rd inf div and Are assigned As a 155 Battery Section chief you would be tested Only on that system. A it will include some questions from the next higher skill level. For example a specialists test will include some questions from a sergeant s test. A it will be important to your career. A you will need to score a minimum of 70 percent to remain in the army. A a main office switchboard 06155-6010. Ets 348-5741 or 5823. If you fail the test you will be flagged and will be administered a re test six months later. If you fail the re test you will be barfed from re enlistment no waivers. Remember i stated earlier that these changes Are under consideration. The Bottom line is that the set As we know it now is on the Way out the next Issue i would like to address is the reference made that command sergeants major Are Given Breaks or that ?ofavoritism?T7 plays a part in their selection. Having served on several command sergeant major sergeant major selection boards i can assure you that there is no room for a Luck a a break so or master sergeants first sergeants Are selected for promotion based on Many things. To mention a few a previous assignments and positions held. A past performance. A military schooling. A set scores. A no enlisted ratings Over the last five rating periods. A a conduct and character. A potential to assume greater responsibility and the highest enlisted rank. Only the Best master sergeants first sergeants Are selected to be sergeants major or command sergeants major. Iff your command sergeant major is Only 33 years old i can Tell you that he must be one hell of an no i agree that we need to do better As an no corps in rewarding Good performance. I will continue to stress this in my talks with cos and commanders. There Are Many ways to do this a Pat on the Back with a a Job Well a Day off Given by the sergeant. A letters certificates of achievement appreciation. A army achievement medal. A army commendation medal. These Are Good ways t0 wed Good soldiers. We should not promote soldiers As a Reward for Good work. We promote Good soldiers who have demonstrated the potential to assume greater responsibility at the next higher rank. Among the ways of demonstrating such potential Are a make a commitment to the army. A be an excellent Soldier. A qualify a minimum of Sharpshooter on your weapon. A score at least 240 on the aft. A demonstrate High character and morale standards on and off duty. A demonstrate leadership potential. While these Are not hard and fast rules or policy they Are Good the Best should be recommended for promotion. Only the Best should go to Ploc or inc of. Doing of May be Good enough for a recruit private private first class or specialist but it is not Good enough for a sergeant. Lastly i would say to this Soldier a if you have not been told where you stand and when you can expect to be considered for promotion or no then you need to ask your sergeant. If he does not a play it on the line for you then go ask his sergeant. Thank you for your commentary. It is always my pleasure to answer a Good soldiers questions.
