European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 22, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 a a Tav Nelrea tag your column about 90 percent of the time but t one Issue where we Don t see Csc to Cyc has always gotten my hackles up. I refer to your irrevocable stand on adoption. You always advise against letting adopted children know who heir biological parents Are and remain dead set against any Contact after the papers Are signed. I disagreed and wrote twice to Tell you so. When you re used to Back Down 1 thought you were being stubborn but today when i read a column by Carl Rowan 1 changed my mind. This is what he wrote. A just As 1 am against a open marriages a i am against a open there is this thing called bonding that is crucial to family relationships. How does a child truly Bond to adoptive parents when the natural Mother shows up every third thursday and says a remember who your real Mommy is a a open adoptions can become a string of nightmares for All involved. Especially when a Young Mother hands Over a child to an affluent family because she can to afford food and shelter clothing and education. Then five years later that Mother marries a Guy who is bringing in Good Money and she wants her child Back. A an open adoption is not really an arrangement in which a child finds Protection nurture and love under the Wing of a couple who want and need to Bond with a child. It is an in limbo relationship in which the heart May rejoice but the mind keeps waiting for the other Muddy shoe to drop. A the adoption agencies ought to look very carefully at open adoptions now rather than wait a dozen years to see How much human Hurt this new scheme has i done to know How much of this you can make room for in your column Ann but i Hope you will print As much As possible because Carl Rowan opened my eyes about a controversial Issue that 1 never fully understood before. A Chicago Reader dear Chicago thank you for a Superb letter. I am printing every word of it. Carl Rowan has been a Good Friend of mine for Many years and i have always admired his work. As usual he is dead right and i am delighted that he chose to write about his subject. With an Economy of words he presents the problem in exactly the right perspective. Write on Carl dear Ann Landers my husband has been a Drinker for at least 20 years. A a Orrin has never missed a Days work because of his drinking so of course he does no to think he has a problem. I have Given up trying to get Orrin to give up the booze but now he has started to do something that is making me very angry. He is putting Vodka in the dogs water bowl and getting him drunk. The dog staggers around in circles walks into Walls then Falls in a Corner and goes to sleep. In be thought of calling the humane society but in a afraid come and take the dog away. That would break my heart. Can you help Ann my husband thinks you Are very smart because you write a column. I am Only a stupid wife who does no to know anything. Thank you. A Denver dear Denver it is impossible to reason with a drunk so Stop trying. K.? a a and a and learn How to Deal with your husband s Boozy behaviour. If it persists find a better Home Lor the dog. That Pooch needs help. C creators Syndicate letters a writer questions locked emergency exits in be been unable to find satisfactory answers to the following questions in my military Community. Could you please provide them from the appropriate authority a Are doors marked with lighted exit signs allowed to be locked during hours of operation in a Public use facility i.e., the Community club a Are double doors to a Public use facility i.e., the shop Pette allowed to have one Side locked during hours of operation when they Are the Only fire exit a Are any of the several adjoining doors i.e., three double doors Side by Side at the Entrance or exit to a building that houses the Exchange snack bar Barber shop etc., allowed to be locked during hours of operation All of these doors appear to be safety release doors constructed to allow easy exit during a fire or other life threatening emergency. But i have regularly found them to be locked requiring exit through Only one Side of the door or at another part of the building. Its confusing and frustrating enough when there is no threat to find a Way out of a building. Imagine the consequences in a fire. In be found this situation not Only in my Community but also at Many other military Community locations throughout Germany. Am i unduly concerned a name and location withheld editors note a Dean Davis Usa eur fire Marshall replies generally doors marked with an exit sign must be unlocked in the direction of the emergency exit during hours of operation unless the doors Are in a part of a building clearly not occupied during those hours. I fully sympathize with your second question. Public building custodians should unlock both door leaves routinely As a matter of convenience if not safety. As you say it is downright aggravating and worrisome when you find one Side locked. It is a safety concern however Only if both door leaves Are necessary to make up the required exit Width. This would normally Only occur in buildings with Over 320 people with Only one alternative exit. The same principle As in the paragraph above applies to the multiple door situation. Only the total number of doors that provide the required exit Width and minimum travel distance must be free for emergency use. Any exit signs near other doors that Are not kept open must be removed. If you have concerns about a specific building in your Community i suggest you request an evaluation by your Community fire chief. ?~37?T Driver asks for a Little consideration in a a Driver with the 37th trans co. A sgt. Robert r. Layman Kaiserslautern West Germany a pot on the Back for an honest Man since everyone seems to take up space on the editorial Page with problems or complaints i would like to fill some space with some positive comments about an employee who works for me. And Check this out he works for cafes. About two weeks ago a customer approached me with a letter commending Trent Davis an employee who works in the Tompkins snack bar in Heidelberg. It seems that while this customer was paying for his merchandise he inadvertently dropped a 20 Mark Bill at the Gas station. He stated that As he was approaching his office Davis came running across the parking lot Yelling that he had lost some Money. Davis then gave the 20 Marks to need less to say a very satisfied customer. As i know this does no to happen often i Hope everyone who knows Trent Davis will join me in giving him a big jumbo Pat on the Back. It made me feel really great knowing 1 have an employee of his Caliper working with me. He is a definite credit to cafes and we re All very proud of him. I would like to see More recognition to individuals who perform acts such As these. I know there Are a lot of Unsung heroes out there we never hear about.
