European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 22, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday March 22, 1990 the stars and stripes a a a Page 21prep picking picking All Europe a tedious task selection of the 1990 stars and stripes All fun room basketball teams including naming the play. A la an a finn hum Tea Piir Tam Ere and coaches of the year brings Down the curtain another Dodds Winter sports program and turns the spotlight on Spring activities which began last. T a c a a am to a m i Oak t 1 m on week with a smattering of soccer games and continues until the announcing of the 1989-90 a amps athletes of the year in Early june. There was so much Good individual Talent around this year both on the boys and girls teams that making the final choices was indeed a monumental task even though i had seen 42 teams play at least once. 1 want to thank All the coaches who submitted nominations with Complete statistics and pictures. I especially appreciate the thoughtfulness of these people who included recommendations on opposing players who had impressed them and suggestions for possible coaches of the year. That kind of support reduced an almost impossible task Down to a most difficult one. Even with the assistance from the coaches and my personal observations. It took a Good Deal of thought and comparison before the final selections were made. Some coaches As usual failed to nominate any players a maybe they believed they did no to have anyone qualified for All Europe consideration. That thinking is logical. However they could have made a suggestion or two concerning some worthy opponent. Doubtless there will be some people who wont agree with the picks but that happens twice a year in december when the All Europe football team is announced and again this time of the year when Tiben Abrams becomes basketball a turn. Every player considered for All Europe had to be nominated by his her coach. As usual the Competition for players and coaches of the year was quite keen. Reckoning was based on just that a achievements this basketball season. Some people May have had super tournaments but were less impressive Over the whole Campaign. They probably were awarded with All tournament recognition. Several coaches made their recommendations by placing emphasis on career performances but Only 1989-90 achievements were considered. Having made stars and stripes All Europe last year did no to necessarily guarantee making this years team. A repeat selection had to be earned. There were three girls a Brussels Masquida James Wiesbaden a Keri Holtham and Heidelberg a Kirsten Keller a who played Well enough again this year to earn a spot on the 1990 squad. Holtham made the team for the third straight year. They were the prime candidates for player of the year recognition. The nod went to James the smallest player on the team at 5-3, because when All things were taken into consideration she had to do More to help her team succeed than the others. She had one other really talented teammate while Holtham was working with a cast of veterans. Keller was the Best big girl in Dodds since Kristin Wilson sparkled for Munich in the Early 1980s. Another highlight of the girls team was the presence for the first time of a set of twins a Kari and Tara Holtham. Vicenza a Heather Schmidt also has a basketball playing twin sister. Allison was named to the second team. Selecting Brussels Don Birdsong As coach of the year Wasny to really As difficult As it might seem. He took an outstanding Sophomore James and a very talented freshman Georgia Bottoms and produced the Small schools Champion. When you have to rely on underclassmen so much and get the Job done so Well you have accomplished something special. Ramstein a Deon Moyd like James the smallest player on the team at 5-8, also did it All in leading the royals to the Best record in Dodds 17-1, to earn player of the year laurels for the boys. His top challengers were berlins Renard Owens Brussels John Boyd and Mannheim a Dominic Vassar. Frankfurt a Mike Kinder the Only repeater and player of the year from the 1989 team also would have been in the thick of the reckoning had he not missed several games because of an injury. Ramstein Sty Taylor took a team that had Only two Letterman returning and folded a new team that took the aaa championship with a 12-0 record and then won the big schools title in an exciting Battle with Frankfurt to get the nod As coach of the year. The stars and stripes fall Europe from Page 17 which posted a perfect Campaign. Keri a amps player of the year in 1989 and three time most valuable player in the big schools tournament led the warriors with a 15.2 scoring average. She was the play maker deluxe As Well As a Stalwart on defense. Tara averaged Only 6.3 Points a game but her bal handling and pinpoint passing made her the team Leader in assists with almost 10 a game. She and Keri teamed up perfectly to give the warriors an almost impenetrable defense in coach Mike Montoya s fundamentally Strong just might be the most Complete basketball player in Europe this year a Montoya said. A she does it All with humility and finesse. And Tara was the Best press breaker on our nor re pro a was the leading scorer in a i year a 25.3 average an Khz Lgth 8a?Les of 39 and 36 against Ansbach and International school of Brussels respectively. She also hauled own 11 rebounds and recorded 2 steals Kinder Buckner Bishop Sidney Darrell Boyd 2.8 assists and 2.5 blocked shots a game. A her statistics indicate Well her abilities and skills a wrote Vilseck Mentor Janis ready. A but she is even More valuable for her leadership qualities. She was an inspiration for our Young Sparrow like Bottoms made a vivid impression As a freshman. The 5-5 Forward averaged 13.3 Points and 5.7 rebounds a game. She also came up with 3.8 assists and 3.5 steals a game. A Saundria has excellent skills both offensively and defensively a Frankfurt coach Karen Snyder appraised. A to see her play leads one to question How she can be so Good for her Keller developed into the Best big player in Dodds since Kristin Wilson sparkled for Munich almost a decade ago. She averaged 21 Points 12 rebounds and four blocked shots a game including a 46-Point, 17-rebound game against Ramstein during regular season and a 41-Point, 22-rebound, 6 blocked shot performance against Frankfurt in the big schools third place game. A Kirsten is an excellent All around Talent who has improved vastly Over last years outstanding season a Heidelberg coach Rich Bennett said. A she possesses All the fundamental and advanced skills to be considered not Only the Best Center but the Best player in like Keller Traweek closed out her Campaign in sensational fashion. She averaged 19.5 Points 14.3 boards 6.3 blocks and 4.1 steals and assists for Croughton this season winning . Al conference and All tournament recognition for the third straight year. Anderson was the key performer As Lakenheath turned its program around completely. She averaged 19.2 Points 10 rebounds and 7 assists per game As the lancers overcame a last place 1989 performance by winning both the . League and tournament championships. She was map of the tournament wrapping up that award with 36 Points in a 42-37 Conquest of Croughton in the title game. 1989-90 All Europe basketball team the girls squad the boys squad position player sly Are amp org a boy oms pc Maria Armstrong award Aundria Sparrow for re Heather Suhs Center Kirsten Keller Guir i Kristie Traweek r251a,.
