European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - April 26, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11anrr Landers dear Ann Landers my husband and i consider our marriage one of the Best. We Are Ini i our late 50s, like to play Golf take several vacations during the year and enjoy our family and friends. Our Home is Lovely we both hold Down Good jobs and we Are truly contented. What we done to have is sex. We decided 12 years ago that sex was not important to us and agreed to take it off our Agenda. We love each other very much and feel that our lives Are Rich and full. But there has been so much a amortization and exploitation of sex these Days that we would be embarrassed if our friends became aware that it is not a part of our lives. In a sure that they would consider us a Odd a if not abnormal. My question is Are we Peculiar because we choose not to have sex Are there other married couples who also enjoy a full life without it people Tell you everything Ann. We Hope you will print this letter and ask your readers this question. In a sure their responses would be enlightening. For obvious reasons i cannot sign my name. Just Call me a Content in Montreal dear Content while in a sure you and your husband Are certainly in the minority i would not Call you abnormal. What goes on behind closed bedroom doors is nobody a business. Letters guns relationship to deaths discussed Here we go again. The stars and stripes is printing More anti gun demagoguery from Ann Landers. I Hope you allow a response. As usual Landers can Muster no facts that support her conclusions. So like any Good demagogue she simply makes up her own statistics. The a big lies this time is that a a. Guns were the no. 4 cause of death in the United i beg to differ. The following information is from the National Center for health statistics the top three killers were heart disease cancer and stroke in that order. Accidental death of All types was no. 4. Homicides of All types ranked no. 12 forty one fiercest of those homicides did not involve guns and a Virther 13 percent were justifiable homicides committed by persons defending against criminal Active i would like to hear from my readers about this. My guess is that at least one out of five couples Over 60 has joined your a a club and four out of five couples Over 70. How about it out there dear Ann Landers please use your column to help educate people about electrical appliances especially when used around water. Recently a Young boy near Indianapolis was electrocuted when a Nair dryer that was plugged into a Wall socket fell into his Bath water. The grieving Mother said she could not understand How the child could have been electrocuted because the switch on the dryer was turned off. Please Ann explain to your readers that when an appliance is plugged into a socket the wire can still conduct enough electricity from the plug to kill a person. When the switch is a off a it merely prevents electricity from passing to the heating element. When the appliance is immersed in water which is a conductor of electricity the switch is Short circuited and electricity flows through the water. The message disconnect All appliances from the socket when not in use. This goes for Kitchen appliances As Well As those in the bathroom. If an appliance accidentally Falls into water leave it alone until Vou can turn off the electricity at the circuit breaker or fuse panel. A Indianapolis electrician dear Indiana thank you for information that can save lives. After i read your letter i disconnected the radio in my bathroom. Ditto my electric Toothbrush. I urge my readers to do the same. Dear Ann Landers i was interested in the letter from the woman who went to a dermatologist to have some wrinkles on her face filled with Collagen. While she was there she took off her shoe and asked the doctor to look at a skin problem Between her toes. He wrote out a prescription and sent her a Bill for $50. You thought he Wasny to a a Nice 1 Sav if she has $253 to spend on her face she can afford $50 for her feet. A Somerset a. Dear a. You re entitled to your opinion but in a still european edition col. Subtract those percentages and the a gun death ranking Falls even further Down the list. Suicides 59 percent of which Are gun related ranked ninth. Even if Landers included suicide in her list gun deaths would Only be ranked no. 10. But including suicide in any argument favouring gun control is spurious logic. Anyone despondent enough to fire a Bullet through his head is despondent enough to stick his head in an oven. Absence of a gun never deterred a suicide. Landers also stated that four times the number of murders occurred in Washington ., last year As occurred in All of Japan. Assuming this is True a risky Assumption Given Landers reckless disregard for the truth to what does she attribute this dichotomy she says that it is because guns Are More available in the United states. While it is True that guns Are virtually banned in Japan that does not explain the difference in homicide rates. If it did the homicide rate for japanese americans in the United states would be comparable to other americans. In fact these japanese Ameri cans with ready Access to guns have a homicide rate not Only much lower than other americans but also lower than japanese living in Japan one other fact that Landers never mentions is that 97 percent of All homicides Are committed by persons with histories of violent behaviour. I think her time would be better spent crusading for longer prison terms for violent offenders. A Frank r. Sweet Kriegsfeld West Germany editors note a Ann Landers replies your Reader is Correct when he states that guns arc not the leading cause of death in this country or even no. 4 a however guns Are the no. 4 cause of accidental death among children under the age of 14, according to the National safety Council. And guns rank second Only to automobiles As the leading cause of fatal injuries. The Point Here is that while the a a leading causes of death or a a killers As he Calls them arc heart disease cancer and strokes these Are primarily associated with old age a and Are part of the aging process which can be slowed Down but never totally prevented. Death by firearm however is different. When we look at a kill Erst we must look at the ways people lose their lives that Are unrelated to the aging process a and certainly homicide and suicide Are major factors. The majority of homicides and suicides Are committed with firearms. According to the Fri uniform crime report for 1988, 60 percent of homicides involved firearms and 45 percent of All homicides involve handguns. The no. 2 form of homicide does no to even come close a stabbings make up Only 19 percent followed by poisons or explosives 8 percent. As for suicides the majority 60 percent Are committed with guns and 70 percent of those Are handguns. Contrary to the writers claim that guns have no relationship to suicide there is ample evidence that there is a close relationship. A study by the Western psychiatric Institute in Pittsburgh found that suicidal teen agers living in Homes where guns Are present arc far More Likely to kill themselves than Are suicidal teen agers living in Homes without guns. The fact is guns Are far More lethal than any other Means of suicide with nine out of 10 attempts with guns successful. A person who attempts suicide with pills or by a sticking their head in an oven has a much greater Chance of being found and saved. Guns Are lethal. As for a comparison of Japan the japanese government was the source of the figure that 46 people were murdered with handguns in Japan in 1985. Contrast that to the 464 americans killed with guns in a single and typical week in May of last year time Magazine july 17,1989. The Bottom line is that the United states loses More people to guns every two years about 60,000 than we lost in the entire Vietnam War. This to me is the most damning statistic of All. In Praise of Anthonys pizza at Hanau recently in my wanderings of West Germany my travels took me to the Wolfgang Hanau Post Exchange. In the concessions Hall was our beloved Anthonys pizza of cafes Fame. Although initially i was Loath to the idea of having Anthonys pizza for dinner i was talked into it.
