European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - April 27, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11hn Landers dear Ann Landers please print this. It happened. Letters dear a Tommy i done to know if that a your real name but please forgive me. Today i watched you being physically abused and i stood by and did nothing. We were in Sears you and i along with your dad your Mother your Little sister and several other folks. My guess is that you Are about 4 years old. I could see that you were tired. It was about 4 p.m., and your Little legs hold you up any longer. You were leaning against a washing machine a or was it a dryer you lagged behind your mom and dad when suddenly your dad turned around and kicked you. He yelled a move it a your whole body Shook. Your Mother looked on. Did her heart break mine sure did. Was she intimidated by your dad or was she used to this sort of thing she did no to say a word. Then your father screamed a get you started to cry and covered your head with your jacket. In a ashamed to admit that i listened to the Friend i was with who warned me to stay out of it. All i did was mutter under my breath a what a i was upset and angry. I wanted to run after you and hold you in my arms and Tell your father to get Down on his Knees and say he was sorry. I wanted to lie and say i was with the Suffolk county department of child abuse but i did no to do it and i hated myself for being such a Chicken. In a sorry i Promise 1 will never be silent again. ?., Long Island dear . These Days when so Many people out there Are nutty and a Medit can be risky but in this Case i feel you surely should have told the Man what an adorable Little boy he had and How Lucky he was. Dear Ann Landers several months ago a co worker informed me that she was moving into the neighbourhood and the Only Way she could get to work was to take the train and two buses. Because i have been in that spot myself i Felt sorry for her and offered to let her ride to work with me. The problem this woman ill Call her a a Jill has not offered so much As a dime for Gas parking or Wear and tear on my not so new car. Apparently she thinks that because i offered to let her ride with me she is a guest in my car and has no responsibility to share in the expenses. I have tried Subtle hints in be complained about the Price of City parking Gas Etc., but her Only response has been a gee that a too i realize now that i should have raised the Issue of shared expenses right off the Bat but since i did no to do it i done to know How to handle the problem. Now i am saving Jill at least $80 a month not to mention the inconvenience and hours of aggravation when one must depend on Public transportation. Please Lay Down some ground rules for carpool ers and also explain that there is a big difference Between being practical and being cheap. A running on empty. In . Dear empty you Are right when you say you should have talked to Jill about sharing expenses when you invited her to ride with you. I hate to be corny but a better late than you say you Are saving Jill $80 a month in my opinion you Are entitled to $40 a month for the delivery service. Tell her you la take either Cash or a Check. C creators Syndicate a dental health care problems explained As a health care provider dentist in the military health system i come in Contact with Many people each Day. Recently a Soldier visited us obviously frustrated and upset with the health care system. He left before i had a Chance to address his misconceptions. May i take this Chance to answer a a i was told that i could get braces for my kids in Germany and now you say you wont be Able to do it a like the rest of the army we Are Given a budget a very Small percentage of the defense budget and a manpower allocation. Also like the rest of the army in these Days of cutbacks our budgets Are shrinking and the number of personnel is also decreasing. The old adage of doing More with less applies Here. It gets to the Point that sometimes we have to do without even the most Basic supplies and we Are forced to Cut Back services. A a if you did no to play As much Golf my family could be try a mile in the shoes of the health care provider. Though the clinic opens at a certain hour we Are there earlier preparing for the Day. We get an hour for lunch and then often stay two hours after the clinic closes to a tie up Loose physical training it is accomplished on our own after the duty Day is Over. We Are still expected to do All the military tasks required of other soldiers . Weapons qualifications set Etc. As dentists we pull emergency a Call a a period beginning Friday after working the Normal duty a Tours running 24 hours through the weekend and at nights during the week. This is in addition to our regular five Day work week. No comp time is Given. Improving Access to health care is a prime concern of the dental medical commanders. This is often done at the expense of the morale of the health care provid ers. For example selected dental clinics will be open on saturdays Quot to improve Active duty can you imagine being the dentist now required to work six Days a week again no comp time and trying to spend Quality time with family or perhaps seeing Europe in addition for the last Usa eur and 7th me com training holidays our clinic was open and fully staffed. Arc you sure you want to continue walking in our shoes a a i face coming to this clinic and sit waiting in that crowded waiting room All someone has to treat those people you Sec in the waiting room every Day. Do you think it is any easier for us to lace that waiting room every Day a a a that a what you get the big Bucks according to a recent Survey a military dentist 50 percent of his civilian counterpart including benefits. A military physician just 33 percent of some of his her civilian colleagues. Is it any wonder that Many health care providers seem to stay Only a Short time in the army for Many there Are intangible rewards of service in the army but for others pay is just As frustrating As it is to other soldiers. How Many soldiers Are trying to pay off a school debt equivalent to the Cost of a nouse do i blame you for being upset with the system no. But before you begin to yell and swear at me or my staff remember you Are telling the wrong people your frustrations. We Only carry out the directives of our commanders and those of Congress. Voice your concerns to the medical dental commanders who arc sincerely trying to better the system. Better yet voice your concerns to those who allocate the funds and dictate general policy a Congress. A name and location withheld done to throw out readiness readers urge we Are members of the United states air Force stationed at Tempelhof Central Airport West Berlin. We have faithfully served our nation during our military careers and Hope to stay in the air Force for another 10 years. We could have gone to College and had a career in the electronics Field making $50,000 or More a year. Instead we chose to serve our country in its armed services earning less than $20,000 a year. But we arc proud to be members of the United states military defending the Freedom for which Many of our fellow service members have fought and died. That is Why it is so hard to believe that one member of Congress is More concerned with the a integrity of the budget process than with the integrity of americans National Security. Has rep. A Dorothy Carol Roberts 79 shard close Liverpool Merseyside l110dp England he should a walk a Miles in a a shoes before making a decision that will adversely affect the lives of thousands of military people and weaken the defense posture of our great nation. We realize that the changing political situation in Eastern Europe requires a certain degree of flexibility trom us All. We should not however totally discard All caution in this matter. Here is a quote from Dmitri Manu Ilski speaking on the communist philosophy of negotiation at the Lenin school of political warfare Moscow 1931 a War to the Hilt Between communism and capitalism is inevitable. Today of course or Are not Strong enough to attack. Our Tunc will come in 20 or 20 years. To win we shall need the Clement of Surprise. The bourgeoisie will have to be put to sleep. So or shall begin by launching the most spectacular peace movement on record. There will be electrifying overtures and unheard of concessions. The capitalistic countries stupid and decadent will rejoice to cooperate in their own destruction. They will leap at another Chance to be friends. As soon As their guard is Down we shall smash them with our clenched How Long will our nation sit idly by As the congressional a wheels of Progress weaken the defense of our nation to the Point that the philosophy mentioned above becomes reality who will be left to Delend our nation will congressmen be willing to Bear arms As our forefathers so willingly did we Hope so because if the rape of the defense budget continues there wont be anyone left to defend our nation a tech.
