European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - April 30, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11 letters a life in Germany whatever one makes it our family has been stationed in Karlstedt West Germany for the past three years. We be had our Good times As Well As our bad times. To All of you people out there who have nothing better to do than complain about what you done to have and Why you can to do what you want to do for whatever reason Here a something for you. The Exchange Complex in Karlstedt is not perfect but i will give credit where credit is due. If i did no to see something on the shelves i asked one of the sales people if they had it in the storeroom. They were More than glad to Stop what they were doing to go and Check for me. Within five or 10 minutes they would come Back and Tell me that they were out of that product at that time but it was on order and it would probably be in within a couple of weeks. They even went so far As to apologize for not having it in at the time that i needed it. So what i could wait another month for what i wanted. If they did no to have it what was the big Deal about needing it right then at least they tried to help me out. The same thing goes for the commissary and the shop Pettes Here. If i did no to see something on the shelves that i needed the salespeople or Cashiers would go to the storeroom and see if they had what i needed Back there. If they were temporarily out they even went so far As to Check when their next shipment of Brand x would be coming in and let me know that information also. You have a complaint about your dental clinic local clinic or Hospital Check out what we have in Karlstedt. The people Here can to be beat As far As my family is concerned. All of these people deserve a big Pat on the Back and a huge round of applause for the hard work they do on a daily basis. Not being the biggest in the world they do a Superb Job with what they be got to work with. They be always been there for us whenever one of our kids got Hurt. The Hospital in Bremerhaven also did a Superb Job for us Over the past three years. Two of our children were born at this Hospital. Everyone there went out of their Way to see that those two got a healthy Start in life. All the clinics in be had to Deal with there have always taken the attitude that they care about those who come through their doors a whatever time of the Day or night. They always tried to be prompt and Cour-9 a crypt quips coming is there a Chance of running a on a daily basis a staff sgt. Ronaldo r. Caguin Pitburg a West Germany editors note a it will Start May 7 right under the crossword. Thous sometimes an emergency would come up and appointments had to be stretched beyond their Normal times or cancelled for another time. So what sometimes things like that happen. For reasons i wont go into Here i had to go to the Legal assistance office in Karlstedt. Even though i came through their doors at 4 . On a thursday afternoon and did no to have an appointment they were More than glad to help me out with my problem. They do anything for me that afternoon but the first thing the following morning they were right on it making phone Calls and checking the proper regulations and whatever else they could think of to help in any possible Way. A big Hooray to them and a round of applause for their helping me out one last area id like to address before i close this letter is Dodds. For those of you who done to know what that is its the school system Here in Germany. The teachers in the osterholz elementary school Are doing a Superb Job of teaching on a daily basis. A special thank you goes to mrs. Bowyer for making our daughters first year in the school system a fun filled experience. She Laid the groundwork for making sure that our daughter started her schooling on the right foot. Thank you also goes to the rest of the osterholz elementary school for supporting mrs. Bowyer in her teaching methods. Please continue to support her and keep her in the school system teachers like her Are hard to come by what a the Point of this letter you May ask its As simple As this instead of jumping the gun and writing a letter to the editor with a complaint because the Exchange does no to have Brand x of your favorite color shoes or the commissary does no to carry Brand y of your favorite Coffee just ask someone if they can help you. It May be in the Back and they Haven to had a Chance yet to put it out on the shelves. If you done to get satisfaction from that individual ask to see the manager. Take it All the Way up the line a somewhere along that Chain there a someone who a bound to know the answer and will be Able to help you out. With a Little bit of ingenuity an individual May be Able to solve his her problem locally before writing that letter to the editor. If All that fails then write your letter to the editor. I have yet to see the editor fail to come through with an answer. One last thought for the Day quit complaining about How a a bad you be got it Over Here in Germany. After All each tour is different. And its All in what each individual wants to make out of each situation and area that he comes across in his lifetime. A name withheld Karlstedt West Ger Manyann Landers dear Ann Landers 4 a would like to respond to family Friend who was critical of the teen agers who went to the mortuary to pay last respects to a she said there must have been at least 200 teens present and a 111 that it was t possible Lor a Young a he pen a it my / 5 person to have 200 close friends. % j the Assumption was that the kids i were simply curiosity seekers who had no business there. The writer a i also complained that the teen agers cried out loud lying onto each other jamm.,1 the parking lot and not one of them had the Good sen i walk Over to the family and offer condolences. I am a teen Ager who has lost three Good friends and two teachers in the last two years. None of these people died of natural causes. The Shock was awful. The Only Way my friends and i could Deal with the pain was to go to the mortuary and cling to each other As we said our last goodbye. Thanks for sticking up for us Ann. You were right when you said Young people have a feeling of immortality and when one of their own Dies its a terrible Shock. If you print my letter please sign it a still sad in Columbus dear sad in be received a great Many letters from teen agers and adults who were upset with a family most of the outrage came from parents of teen agers who had died. Here a a sampling of what in be been getting from Davis okla since i am the Mother of a teen Ager who died of unnatural causes 1 believe i am qualified to respond to a family Friend with some authority. When my daughter died it was a great Comfort to know that so Many of her friends cared enough to come to the funeral Home and visit her one last time. Not All who came were close friends but that was All right. I Don t believe teen agers arc a curious about they would rather not think about it at All. As a Parent who is still grieving let me say it helped a lot to see so Many Young faces gather at the mortuary. Dayton i lost my son in a construction Accident. He was l. His death was sudden and tragic. I was in such a Dae i did no to know who showed up at the mortuary but 1 was moved by the hundreds of names in the guest Book. Even if those people weren to close friends they cared enough to come. San Jose our teen Ager was killed by a drunk Driver. Our grief was made worse by anger and rage a that this Beautiful child should be taken from us by a Man who was so intoxicated he stand up. In a glad you said teen agers have the right to congregate at a funeral Home. Their presence gave us strength. Long Island our 16-year-old son died unexpectedly last july. We thank god for his Young friends who came to Comfort us. They were a lot More help than the adults. We could not have gotten through the trauma without them. Woodhaven Mich i am a 17-year-old who is concerned about the Way teen agers Are looked at by adults. The letter from a family Friend was a Good example. One of our own died last year and a lot of kids went to the funeral even though they did no to know the parents. Was that wrong our class sent a Lovely Floral offering that was funded by our class Treasury. It made us feel better and we Hope the family appreciated it even though a lot of us were thanks for sticking up for us Ann. We needed that.
