European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 10, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11 letters a supplying foods for passover explain Dann Landers dear Ann Landers i almost dropped my Coffee when i read your advice to the kindhearted woman who is taking care of her elderly Mother in Law and does not receive a Penny in return although the old lady is Well heeled. A a mrs. Greatheart has another son whose wife does no to do one thing for the woman although she has a big Home and could afford to help. When your correspondent wrote that she just Learned her Mother in Law had written a will and was dividing everything equally Between her two sons you told her a never mind your husbands brother and his wife. Just keep on doing what you know is right. You will feel Good about yourselves for the rest of your lives while those other two will have to Deal with the Burden of guilt that will surely haunt Ann you blew it. I am a Law student at Georgetown and can Tell you that the woman is entitled to More than just feeling Good about herself. And that Claptrap about the selfish son and his do nothing wife being a haunted by guilty is baloney. People like that have no conscience. They done to feel a thing. That saintly daughter in Law should buy herself a notebook and record every hour she spends taking care of her Mother in Law and keep receipts for All the medication purchased plus anything else she buys for the woman. The care she is giving the old lady would Cost about $225 a Day if she had to pay for it when the Mother in Law Dies an itemized Bill should be presented to the lawyer or to the administrator of the estate. This kindhearted daughter in Law deserves to be compensated financially for her time Energy and Money spent. She needs to know that the Law is on her Side. With All the lawyers you have Access to 1 can to imagine Why you did no to Check this out. . Who reads you in the Washington Post dear . You re right and i am ashamed of myself. I have since checked with Charles Nessen who teaches at the Harvard Law school and this is what he said handing a Bill to the estate does not ensure reimbursement. There must be a written or Oral contract. In 1985, the supreme court of Minnesota ruled on such a Case. Alice Beecham a nurse and the second wife of Bill Beecham cared for his elderly Mother in their Home. The woman had told her repeatedly a a in la pay you Back one Day for taking care of she died after two years and left nothing to her daughter in Law. Alice Beecham sued the estate for $44,000 for a nursing and personal care and collected. Dear readers recently a Man wrote that after a routine exam by his family doctor he was told that he was in Fine shape. His prostate however was slightly enlarged but that was to be expected he said for a a Man of my a few months later he went to a urologist for a routine checkup just to make sure. The doctor found a growth on the prostate that proved to be malignant. I then suggested ultrasound As the state of the Art diagnostic tool. My Bright eyed Alert medically oriented readers let me know promptly that ultrasound should not be used As a screening tool. They said the digital test is Best and if an abnormality is found it is then advisable to use the ultrasound and two blood tests to verify their finds. My thanks to All the urologists who wrote to set me straight. C creators Syndicate we would like to Correct a mis impression that was created by a recent article in the stars and stripes namely that the commissary system displays a a Lack of sensitivity Quot to the religious needs and customs of our jewish customers. Unfortunately the reporter focused on some customers expressions of dismay and excluded information that was provided to him on the efforts both Tsa eur Cor troop support Agency european commissary Region and dare defense subsistence Region Europe made to procure adequate supplies of Kosher foods for passover. We made efforts Well in Advance of passover to ensure a smooth flow of Kosher products for the Holiday. On nov. 14, 1989, Tsa eur Cor issued a message to All its commissary officers that advised them of the need to place their orders in december for the 1990 passover season and provided them a listing of 57 Semi perishable Kosher products that should be stocked. Commissary officers did in fact place their orders in december for a March 21 delivery to Europe. Deliveries for seven of our largest commissaries arrived As Early As March 14, but by april 6 we had received Only about half of the products we had ordered. The transportation delays we experienced with these products Are a fact of life in our business. Usually a Short delay does not profoundly affect our operations since we Are Able to maintain a safety level of most stocks. Unfortunately Large supplies of Many Kosher products Are not in our warehouses since the demand for them other than during jewish holy Days is not great. Our attempts to order the passover products earlier were unsuccessful As we were told by the sole . Supplier available to us that production of passover products did not begin until december. Also we Learned a valuable lesson during the 1989 passover season when we attempted to sell matzoh that was still within its shelf life but not manufactured for that years passover. In response to the transportation delays dare locally procured 10 Semi perishable items including matzoh matzoh meal and be filth fish and supplied it to Tsa eur Cor and air Force commissaries. Two perishable Kosher products a whole Chicken and ground Turkey a Are regularly locked at is re a warehouses for Supply to commissaries and records show that adequate supplies were available Well in Advance of passover. An article in dare s March bulletin to commissary managers Drew attention to the fact that the items were available and should be stocked for passover. Working with the commissary systems dare began efforts on feb. I to secure additional perishable items for passover. The Only supplier that dare could find was located in Israel and orders were placed with them on feb. 9 for deliveries on or about March 26. On March 27 the company informed us that the vessel delivering the merchandise had mechanical problems in the Mediterranean sea and that delivery could nol be made until the week of april 9, too late for passover. Dare later Learned that residual stocks of two of the products we had ordered were available in the Vendor s German warehouses. These products whole Chicken and Boneless Chicken breasts were delivered to commissaries Between april 2 and 6. In addition to these Many efforts. Tsa eur Cor monitored the Levels of Kosher products at their commissaries and where necessary redistributed the merchandise to ensure that everyone had the Best possible Stockage level. There May be a better Way of ensuring adequate supplies of Kosher products for jewish holy Days and we intend to explore this Issue As soon As possible by meeting with jewish chaplains Here in Europe. We do believe however that our efforts demonstrate that we arc sensitive to our customers needs. Every customer is important to us and we do our Best to provide the products and services our customers want and need. A col. Paul w. Phillips commander Tsa eur Cor a col. William j. Flanagan or.
