European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 11, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11h i u Ann Landers a some thoughts on Corporal punishment you will undoubtedly receive Many responses to the letter about Corporal punishment. As a teacher of some 25 years both in the United states and in dependent schools in Europe and Asia i could understand the writers concern if Corporal punishment were permitted in american schools. It is not. Should it happen and if it is brought to the attention of the authorities the teacher responsible is As they say a in deep but the writer mentioned that she had a by chances watched the Oprah Winfrey show. This would indicate that she is not a regular viewer and is not aware that this program thrives on controversial topics to keep audience attention. As the writers son is Only 2 a it would be a Good idea if she would Contact the dependent school in her area and observe some of the classes. There is time to do this before her son starts school and it will help her to put the american teacher Pupil relationship in a More positive perspective. What concerns me most about the letter is the underlying anger at americans As a whole. Failing to do this perhaps it would be better for her to Send her son to a German school. Then everyone would be happier. A Jean Edwards Raf upper Heyford England i am not in disagreement with her feelings on Corporal punishment. In a glad she is against it. My concern is with her slanderous attitude towards americans in general. I am not a fan of rap music. I done to consider a a rappers particularly talented. I also feel that some of the ideas presented in rap music Are at the very least controversial and potentially dangerous and subversive. However i fully support their right to play and produce their kind of music i would be willing to fight for them to do so. Censorship in any form is immoral. What Tipper Gore and the parents music resource Center advocate is not merely the censorship of music but the suppression of ideas. The right Wing is forever lambasting a a liberals for trying to bring to the West a More socialist form of government a government which intervenes in the private lives and interests of its people. What could be More dangerous and subversive than the censorship of ideas mrs. Gore and those of her ilk seem to think that All of us Are incapable of making rational decisions about what is right for us As individuals. They want to take the responsibility for our lives away from you and me. What this country needs is not More intrusion into she asks a where Are the great american people Quot thousands of us Are right Here in your Homeland in the name of world peace. She asks a is no to the United states supposed to be the a Home of the Brave a a what does bravery have to do with Corporal punishment. I also watched the particular Oprah Winfrey program referred to. What in the world do you think the show was if not one of the Many efforts being made to ban Corporal punishment the majority of the people on that program were against it and arc trying to have it banned. A Linda Horne Crail sheim West Germany i had the a aboard of education applied to my a seat of learning Many times at school and Many Many More times did the Belt or Fly swatter tear up my legs at Home. But somehow i ended up graduating from High school third in my class finished two College . Degrees with honors both times was very athletic in High school and still am and presently make Over $45,000 As a 30-year-old electrical Engineer. Yet i done to hold one bit of animosity toward my parents or teachers for the Way i was brought up and disciplined. I think it works just Fine and my kids will find that out just like i Dick. I just feel sorry for the writers children. Id hate for someone later in life to have to do the Job for her that she did no to do. A name withheld Darmstadt West Germany the lives of its citizens but More Freedom for the individual. America is not about rigid controls Over its citizenry. Day by Day in Eastern Europe we witness the failure of such strict government controls. The United states is about Freedom a religious economic and most importantly Freedom of the mind the Freedom to make choices for oneself that affect the outcome of our lives. As an army officer i have taken an oath to defend such freedoms. Taking away the Freedom to choose that which is potentially dangerous is still tyranny. Perhaps rap music is a menace As some people believe it to be. The proper response though is not to censor or impose restrictions on it but to better educate the people of the United states to distinguish Between that which is dangerous and subversive and that which is nothing More than an alternative form of music. And let the people decide. ?1st it. Kevin d. Lewis bad Kissinger West Germany dear Ann Landers i went to the doctor for a checkup after i experienced tightness in my Chest and pain in my left Arm. The doctor sent me to the Hospital for a stress test and an . I was at the Hospital for an hour and a half. The next Day my doctor called and said everything looked Fine. Of course i was relieved. The tightness and pain he said were due to stress. Ann i did t know what stress was until i received the Bills. The doctor charged me $350 for a 20-Minutc appointment. The Hospital Bill was $1,500 for a test that ran an hour and a half. The Bill from the doctor who read my was $ 165. We do not have medical insurance because we can t afford it. For a family of four in our area it costs $600 every three months. We told the Hospital and doctor that we could pay $75 a month. They both said it Wasny to enough. They want to be paid in Lull. How do the insurance companies doctors and hospitals expect working people to come up with that kind of Money what do poor people do is getting sick and requiring medical attention Only for the wealthy what can people in this country do to get decent affordable medical attention and health insurance i told my husband that the next time i get sick. 1 will either stay at Home and get Well or die at Home. Working people Are up against it. This is a serious crisis. Any suggestions you seem to be the Only one who cares. A upset in Alton ill. Dearal i discussed your letter with three Chicago physicians. They said when tests Are done in a Hospital you should expect to pay about 50 percent More. They also said you were grossly overcharged. If you had had those tests in the office of a Chicago doctor the Bill would have looked something like this $200 for the Echo and $125 for a one hour physical assuming you were a new patient. There Are no easy solutions to this problem. It appears however that sooner or later Congress is going to come up with a National health insurance plan that will ensure coverage for everyone. Expensive sees hut if we can find billions for foreign Aid and military hardware surely we can find funds to take care of our of n people. Dear Ann Landers i am still angry As i write this. Last night on to a woman who had been raped was interviewed. She is legally Blind and lives in Chicago. She identified the rapist by feeling his hands and face and enlisting her sense of smell. In spite of clinical evidence and identification of the rapist by the victim the defense kept asking Why she did not struggle. This line of questioning suggested that because the woman did no to fight her attacker she was a willing participant. Why is it that a woman must be severely beaten or killed before the Public believes she has been raped yet some authorities say the woman should not fight Back. Who is right a b.r., Tulsa dear Tulsa the natural inclination is to fight Hack and most experts recommend it but the time place and circumstances can make a difference. If the attack occurs in a secluded area where no one can hear or come to the Rescue it is probably Best to submit. . Dear judge it would be a better safer world if rapists were put away for a Long Long time c creators Syndicate pen pals i am a 24-year-old algerian Man.
