King Cruger Mediterranean Bureau Nettuno Italy a the american cemetery at Nettuno holds a special meaning for Alfredo Rinaldi. As a teenager in 1945, he helped locate the remains of Many of the 7,862 servicemen buried there. Its the reason the 62-year-old italian never misses a Chance to visit. A every year i come to the memorial Day service. I was Here when the cemetery was born a the native of nearby Anzio said As he showed visitors around the town on a recent Spring Day. Many of the dead buried or commemorated at Nettuno gave their lives in the liberation of Sicily the landings at Anzio and Salerno and the subsequent heavy fighting North. In january 1944, Rinaldi was a 15-year-old living with his family in a comfortable House just off the seafront in nazi occupied Anzio. A before the landings the German commander ordered the evacuation of All locals living within four Miles of the beaches at Anzio and Nettuno. I went with my family to Rome and was there when the allies made their Surprise amphibious landings at 2 . On Jan. 22, 1944,? Rinaldi recalled. Although the allies encountered virtually no initial resistance the germans soon hurled three counterattacks against them. But those German thrusts were stopped by a magnificent ground defense. Two months after the landings and while fighting still raged in the Anzio area Rinaldi who knew nothing about what was happening on the War front began walking alone from Rome to Home. The 38-mile trip to the South was uneventful and Rinaldi crossed through the front then about three Miles outside Anzio without knowing it. A an american Soldier asked me in italian where i was going. I told him i was going Home to Anzio. He Shook his head but gave me a lift to the Anzio Railroad station a Rinaldi said. A i left Rome without telling my family where i was going. I just wanted to see my House. We had left everything behind and when i got to the House it was empty. Italians operating with permits from the germans had stolen everything a Rinaldi said with a sad shake of his head. An quartermaster unit adopted Rinaldi As its Mascot a a they called me a Anzio a a he said a and put him to work on Odd jobs in the Kitchen and motor Pool. A i Learned to drive and to speak English from the americans a said Rinaldi who remains accomplished at both. Rinaldi stayed with his i buddies for a year until they sailed for America from the port of Livorno in Northern Italy. A i begged them to take me with them. I had read in the stars and stripes about a boy who had stowed away in a Duffel bag but they said they do it. A sergeant drove me All the Way Back to Anzio in a jeep and the next Day i got a Job at the american cemetery a he said. Today Anzio is a smart resort and English is spoken in Many establishments. A then no one spoke English except me and another Guy. That show i came by the Job As interpreter working with investigators from the a Graves registration service a said Rinaldi a Spry widower who works As a photographer and filmmaker. A temporary wartime cemetery had been established at Nettuno two Days after the landings at Anzio. Rinaldi two gis and an american civilian worked As a team to find bodies that had been hastily buried in makeshift Graves. A i would ask Farmers if they knew where Graves or crosses were in the Fields. Some Days we found one body. Other Days we found three or four. A everybody was blessed before being put into a grave and the burial flags were sent to the families in America a Rinaldi said. He left his Job at the cemetery shortly after the bodies were returned in 1949, but he never lost touch with americans. Some he befriended in Rome and they have become cherished friends. He visits friends in America often. And from time to Lime he meets americans in Anzio who have come to see where their loved ones arc buried at Nettuno.
