European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 5, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11 flu ers letters dear Ann Landers although this letter is addressed to you i am actually writing to your readers. Please print it. Dear readers of Ann Landers column like Many of you i have been a Follower of Ann for Many years. Like you i used to believe that she recommended counselling when she was stuck for an answer. In october 1986, our 3-year-old son Matthew was killed in an Auto Accident. He was in the Back in an to proved child seat a the safest place to be or so we thought none of that mattered. The Driver of the car that hit us was very drunk. When i Learned that he was out on bail 48 hours later i was so furious i made up my mind to kill him. To my Way of thinking it would not have been murder it would have been Justice. By the Grace of god my wife Learned of my plan. She begged me to see a Counselor. I had no Confidence in counselling but i agreed because it meant so much to her. It turned out to be the smartest thing i have Ever done. The Counselor helped me get Over the rage and hate that had poisoned my mind. He helped me see beyond my anger and face the reality of what my plan would have done to my wife and others who cared about me. Today the Man who killed Matthew is in prison. Had i killed him i would be there instead. My wife and i were blessed with a Beautiful baby boy bom last november. Thank you Ann for letting me Tell my Story. It was your repeated recommendation to get counselling that inspired my wife to get me to seek it. The three of us will always be grateful. A John Mandy and Joseph Ohio dear Friend thank you for a letter that must have been difficult to write. To my readers i would like to add this if your first attempt at counselling is unsatisfactory done to give up. See another Counselor. The chemistry May not be right with the first one or even the second. Keep trying. People with problems need a trained non judgmental person who can be objective and help them find their Way through the tangled mess that plagues their lives. I realize psychiatry is costly but there Are Many excellent alternatives. Psychologists social workers pastoral Counselor and other trained therapists can do the Job. The Best Way to find an effective Counselor is through the personal recommendation of a Friend colleague or relative. Ask your physician or Clergyman for a referral. Call the family service association or United Way. Help is available. Its up to you to find it. Dear Ann Landers your advice to the 26-year-old wife to get joint counselling with her Flaky husband was a clinker. The woman a husband spends one weekend a month at Home drinks scotch smokes pot and buys Nice clothes for himself while she shops at garage sales. How can you suggest joint counselling with a husband who is never at Home you should have told her to unload the bum. A ., fort Wayne dear I often have to trim letters in the interest of space. I trimmed some facts that would have made my answer More acceptable. That woman was a devout Catholic and divorce was not a viable option. Thanks for writing. From now on ill trim More carefully. X m__41____1__f., a i guess i am just an unimportant old person of 26 years of age. A Beauty and the beast is one of the Best programs i have seen on an. This is a program that shows there is something Good in this world. I want to see programs with a hero who makes an Effort to change the world and make it better in some minor Way. I done to think one romantic show on an is too much too ask. I am also sure in a not the Only person who feels the Way i do. You want to replace a Well done tender program with a poorly done and most Likely grossly violent program catering to the 25-and-under age group. However you seem to forget that not All ?oe-3s? think its a waste of time to watch a Well done Modem fantasy. What about All of us people exceeding 25 years of age do we count at All we also make up 50 percent of the viewers. Perhaps i could suggest a Compromise i Hope you will consider. Show the first episode of the third season. Some of us have been waiting in anticipation for this episode. So please reconsider. A Catherine l. Dennis Offenbach West Germany editors note a Robert w. Matheson chief television division armed forces radio and television service broadcast Center replies your letter refers to an interview with me published in the stars amp stripes regarding use of Nielsen audience research data in the arts program acquisition Cess and provides the Opportunity to further clarify the use of that data. For the purpose of explaining How ratings data can be used the article listed a number of demographic categories. One of those categories 18-34 was mentioned because it encompasses our so called 18-to-25-year-old a primary i regret you feel that at age 26, you Are a just an unimportant old the use of audience research data is applicable to different age groups. For instance if we have two or three series targeted to 25-to-54-year-Olds and Only room for one in our schedule ratings data can indicate which of the available series can be expected to be most popular with that viewer group. Demographic ratings Are but part of the decision making process. We May also consider whether a series ratings Are rising or falling Over time or whether a series has already been cancelled. As it turns put a Beauty and the beast ratings declined so much in the third season that lbs cancelled the series. We chose not to carry the last season of the show in order to make room for other newer More popular series. Because the entire arts audience is important to us let me repeat a statement made twice to the reporter but not published a we do not program for any one demographic segment of the audience to the exclusion of Nielsen audience research data is a recognized professional tool in the program selection process not Only in arts but in the television programming Industry throughout the country. Arts Access to this data improves our ability to serve you. Writer questions veterans preference rules. A a a. A a a _ i. J a _ a a % my in i Vrnon Rel oct recently i was selected for a civil service Job. The a a veterans whose name was on the top of the list and who had to be offered the Job first decided he did no to want it. I served in the military from March 1983 to january 1990, almost seven years of Active duty. When it came time to prepare my application for employment in the civil service system i very naturally checked a yes in the Box a do you claim veterans what i found out very quickly was that i must be a Veteran of the Vietnam War Era to claim veterans preference not just a Veteran of Active military service. Those of you not familiar with veterans preference believe me its a big advantage. Not Only does it put you on the top of Many Job lists but Many times the employer is required to offer the vet the Job regardless of whether he or she is the Best qualified. Now in a not trying to take away the 5-Point preference the Vietnam Era vets Are presently enjoying. I just done to understand Why in a treated As though in be never served my country. I personally know Vietnam Era vets who spent their time As an my at fort Knox Kyd a and they were drafted. I chose to serve my country and know for a fact that since in be been in we be lost service members in Grenada Panama and on ftps every year. In a not calling myself a hero i just believe i deserve a Little More recognition than the individual who walks straight in Oft the Street.
