Deadline was saturday and the panel met tuesday and determined they were the two outstanding athletes among 11 boys and 10 girls who were nominated by the coaches and or athletic directors of their respective schools. Several athletic directors and coaches either called or wrote that while they were selecting the outstanding performers at their individual schools they be nominating anyone for a amps recognition because their athletes did no to meet the higher standards they thought such consideration demanded. Only achievements during school year 1989-90 in official Dodds sports were considered by the panel. Many athletes nominated have competed in several sports for two years quite a few for three years and some coaches athletic directors submitted career covering material. Official Dodds sports Are those funded and scheduled by Dodds a football Cross country Tennis Golf volleyball basketball wrestling track and Field gymnastics and in the ., girls softball. Buckner is the 26th boy recognized since the stars and stripes got into the High school sports Cov Erac realm under the urging of then night editor Bob Wicker who now is the a amps sports editor. Wicker took on the added duties of Hon Choing the prep scene. The first a amps athlete of the year was Frankfurt a Terry Brennan who was recognized for his 1964-65 achievements. The 1988-89 accolades went to Aviano a Keith Crawford. Although this is the 16th anniversary since girls Ben Abrams sports in Dodds was elevated from girls athletic association status to the High school varsity level Traweek is the 17th girl chosen. Munich a Kristin Wilson and bit urge a Lorraine Lacy were declared co winners in 1982-83 because they were so equal in Talent the panel make an outright selection. Bonne a Chris Foster was the first girl chosen. The 1988-89 selectee was Brussels Jenny Ryall. The selection of Traweek gives upper hey Ford Croughton the most girls honoured three and moves the school into a tie for first place with Madrid Torrejon for the most selectee four. Before the new school was built at Croughton students at tended classes at upper Heyford and three of its athletes red Latimer 1966-67lynne Chapman 1975-76 and Angela Gray a won recognition. Bob Lueke 1965-66david Barnes 1973-74carmen Lis 1976-77 and Marissa Quintanilla captured the accolades from Madrid Torrejon. Berlin and Kaiserslautern had three selections apiece All boys. Only two boys Hanau a Barry Dorset 1977-78 and 1978-79 and Wiesbaden a Sam Murray the next two year repeated. No girl has won the award twice. Only twice has the boy and girl athlete of the year been from the same school. Karen Blake was chosen from Hanau in Dorsey a second year and Munich a Steve Sanders was chosen the year Kristin Wilson shared the accolades with Lorraine a a so what kind of a sports year was 1989-90? like other years it had its ups and Downs. And like other years when All was said and done the Good probably outweighed the bad. All scheduled Competition was staged. All tournaments and championships were held although the Sites of some events especially in Germany and the Bennor weren to determined until the last minute and because of that a couple of dates had to be switched. But Dodds athletes proved once again that they can Cope with adversity the kids did their things and for the most part they did them Well. I offer special congratulations to Kristie and Howard for their achievements and i want to take this time to thank the principals athletic directors coaches and especially the athletes for doing their part in helping make this another Good year in Dodds. To people like Bill Houston who is leaving the system after 30 years of Loyal service to coaches who Are leaving after just a Short tenure to graduating seniors and to the other athletes who arc leaving the Dodds territory i wish you All the very Best always. Don Drakulich has coached Dodds football at Frankfurt and Vicenza for 20 ears and has had championship clubs at oth schools. He rates Buckner among the Best football players he has had. A i can honestly say that Howard would be in my starting Backfield if i were to pick an All Star team from All the players 1 have coached or coached against. This includes several former stars and stripes athletes of the year a Drakulich wrote in his nominating letter for Buckner. Buckner won a amps All Europe recognition in basketball averaging a Dodds Europe High 25.3 Points a game and getting 40 As the cougars ended Aviano a 33-game winning skein. The Points per game and 40-Point single game efforts also were Vicenza records. In his nomination for Buckner for All Europe consideration in basketball t Vicenza Mentor Lennie Dempsey wrote p Howard Wasny to the most Graceful player you a want to see but he was Gutty explosive and determined. There was no pne of his Caliper anyplace else in Buckner was a picture of versatility in track and Field. During the season he took first place in six different events. Limited to four in the Italy regional he had to Settle for 38 Points on firsts in the Long jump High jump and pole vault and a second in the triple jump. He had school records in the Long jump 22-9high jump 6-4 and pole vault 11-0. He also competed in the 100 meters and discus. A in track and Field Howard was the epitome of the de athlete. A natural Leader Buckner was the team Captain in each of his sports and an inspiration to other students in Vicenza according to Drakulich who summarized his letter of nomination by writing a we in Vicenza feel that Howard Buckner is the finest All around athlete that has Ever passed through our doors Mark Friedman and Harry Smith notwithstanding.�?�. Friedman was the stars and stripes athlete of the year in 1970-1971. Smith was an outstanding athlete at Vicenza the same year but he attended Berlin As a senior and won the honors there. Buckner a stiffest Competition in the eyes of the panel Dodds Germany sports coordinator Tom Leblanc Frankfurt football and track coach Charlie Toth and prep pickings came from ans Baches Willie Luke. Traweek capped a for year three sport Campaign in Brilliant fashion a winning All conference and Al tournament and tourney map accolades in volleyball earning All conference All tournament and stars and stripes All Europe recognition in basketball and wrapping up her successful year by teaming with Angie Courtin for a doubles tandem that went undefeated in Tennis completing the season without dropping a set. Veteran coach Larry Daniels wrote in his basketball nominating letter that Traweek is a one of the Best girl High school basketball players i have seen. She can do it All and she did it All for in addition to the demands of a full athletic commitment Traweek found time to serve As a member and president of the Croughton chapter of the National Honor society and president of the senior class.
