The old Sandstone building let every wind through. Even the chipped Ceramic bowls from which we gulped our morning chocolate seemed appropriately ageless. Murdaugh Niernberg West Germany High on a Hill overlooking the Fields and Forest of the ardennes is a Granite Monument in the shape of a five pointed Star. Around its top Are inscribed the names of 49 states in our Union. On Large tablets facing out to the world Are listed innumerable units of America s army that were engaged in fighting the Battle of the bulge. On equally Large tablets facing its heart the Story of this Battle is told in English. Any student of military history or child who grew up with a diet of War movies had heard of this Battle this turning Point in the War. I was neither i knew Little of Wii beyond the principles we fought for and the fact that the Good Guys won. It s bitterly cold there in december and you hear nothing except flags whipping in the wind. As i walk around and read the Story of this most crucial of Battles tears come. This is Bastogne the Hardisson. We have returned to that Hill Many times. Everyone who visits us is taken there. It taught me a lesson about the courage the Quot Grace under pressure Quot that is within All of us a Cynthia Neil Butzbach West Germany it was immediately obvious that the landscapes throughout Iceland Are quite spectacular the rugged mountains the glaciers the Volcano the wastelands the Cliffs overlooking the Ocean the geysers and the Many waterfalls including one with a seemingly magical Rainbow which if one stood in the right place appeared to Start and end right at one s feet making one feel perhaps like a double pot of Gold. We spent nine marvelous Days and nights there but i must Point out that i use the term Quot night Quot loosely. At that time of year late june due to Iceland s proximity to the Arctic Circle it never gets Darker than Twilight for a few hours. The average temperature while we were there was about 50f, which admittedly is Cool but it was unusually sunny and most importantly the air is so Clear and clean and refreshing that the coolness somehow does t matter. And the water is As fresh and delicious As any i be Ever imbibed. Iceland should be a camper s Delight. There Are no snakes no dangerous spiders no dangerous wildlife of any kind. Seemingly no mosquitoes either at least we weren t pestered by any. A Susie Banfield Wei Brincken West Germany aaa the greek Island of Santorini is our favorite european getaway. If we could retire tomorrow you would find us Here. My husband Mike and i stayed at a Flat in Peris a Beach that was owned by a local couple. It was simple and clean and just a few minutes walk from an incredible Black lava Sand Beach where we swam and snor kled. Our hideaway was Only a 20-minute bus ride from thira Santorini s largest town. Thira is perched High upon a Cliff overlooking the bluish Green water of the Mediterranean. The houses Are All White washed and some Are adorned with Bright Blue roofs. Many of the locals Are fishermen. Others tend to the donkeys that serve As transportation up the Steep Cliff for tourists arriving to the Island by boat. A favorite activity of ours is to find a neat delicious greek meal drink a Beer and watch the casual lifestyle of the locals. At night thira is ablaze with lights its reflection cast upon the water below. Traditional greek music fills the air. The mood is set for us and everything feels terrific in Paradise a Jolly a. Sienda Augsburg West Germany aaa often enshrouded by Clouds and looming Over a Beautiful Emerald Valley in Southern Bavaria is a Mountain called Der Kofel. Viewed from the top of this Mountain the tiny woodcarving Village of Oberammergau below reminds one of the wooden figures for which the Village is justly famous. Standing next to the Cross which crowns its Peak you can see the Snow capped peaks of Alps in one direction a Long winding Valley in the foreground and clumps of tiny stiff peaked colourful houses and gardens for Miles in almost every direction. It s not an easy trek to the Peak but is Well Worth the Effort. Roughly six Kilometres by Trail and rising 1,342 meters vertically the walk to the top of the Kofel is Well marked and has Many aids to assist your climb. During the ascent we met Many fellow hikers Young and old alike enjoying the scenery. When you reach the top there s a Logbook on the Back of the Cross for simply signing in or transcribing your thoughts. The exuberance of the climb along with the exhilaration of the View Combine to make this Mountaintop my favorite place in Europe.
