European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 7, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse At right the Church of Sacra Coeur glistens in the night. Below staff writer Don Tate and photographer Peter Faeger pause for lunch at the Eiffel Tower. for Tari by Don Tate staff writer what could be greater than being on the Road to Paris then stopping in a Little greening Patch of French Woods for a bite of lunch and sip of wine under a new Spring sky suddenly raining Sunshine Quot my god what a great Day Quot marvels one Paris nut. Quot in t this just great Quot Quot we d better get going Quot says the other. Quot Don t worry Quot says the first. Quot Paris is just in Case it in to we climb Back into our car and ramble off. What could be greater than rambling across the French Countryside hair flying in the wind looking across the beige Fields that spawn the Best Champagne in the world on the Road to Paris of course the one thing greater than being on the Road to Paris is actually being in Paris on a red Golden Day made by the gods. My partner on this assignment to capture the Richness of Paris without being Rich is a German named Peter. Peter is a seer As in one who sees with eyes like a swooping eagles Only he s a swooping circling Eagle photographer a snap snap a trying to catch her mood of the moment every changing Little expression of Light Shadow form contrast. Yes her mood. Paris is a teasing Quot her Quot that Peter pursues around each Corner up every twisty Street juggling cameras Lens film looking for the great shot the All seeing picture. Quot you think you know her but you never do Quot he says. Quot look there yes yes Quot when Peter gets to going on about Paris it s like a Man seeing his first love after a Long time and getting suddenly totally drunk All Over again on her spend Ferous charms. He first visited Paris As a student 30 years ago and he keeps going eagerly Back and Back. He can never see enough of her. Just when Peter thinks he s got her finally revealed on film Paris gives him one of those devastating new looks that fogs up his Lens and makes his camera shake. Maybe she s too much of a mystery too great a Beauty for one mortal photographer to capture but Peter keeps chasing her in a state of palpitating excitement and bounding Energy that would kill lesser lovers. Listen he instructs if you really want to know her Don t waste time on the big Boring shows like the Folies Bergere which is for boobs and passe anyway. Don t waste time eating the big Multi starred meals which will turn you into a big physical wreck and make you poor. If you have the depth of Fingernail polish Don t waste time doing dumb tourist things like endless shopping and spending Money. That is the obvious going broke in Paris thing. In Peter s Paris what you need Are an insatiable sense of discovery and a great charging climbing the matterhorn pair of legs. Peter s Paree is a dazzling spontaneous endless outdoor show and just walking around is the Best ticket to see it. It s not really a walk the Way Peter goes it s More like a rocket trying to launch in three directions at once. Quot look there unbelievable Quot and it goes 011 18 hours a Day into the night. Even on arriving and setting up in a Little old no Star hotel with the ceiling that creaks and sags the Steps that wave and sink the ancient wallpaper that stares and whispers through the cracks altogether a place of formidable character and Only two blocks from the rive there s not a moment to lose. Throw the bags in the room and plunge off. Outside. Down the narrow Street to the Rue de Riv ii Long legging it toward the Seine. Quot look there look there Quot snap snap. If enthusiasm was rabbits he would be multiplying faster than you could say Quot Peter a it in the Early morning there Are the fresh baked baguettes those Long thin loaves of bread that Stab through the sack like a sword. They Are Peter s passion. He rushes out through the Early chill to fetch continued on Page 12 above girls sit on the Bank along the Seine in the background is the Pont Des arts.
