The winds had been Light and variable unpredictable at times nonexistent. The Mermaid s sails had collapsed and we weren t making headway. We were merely Bobbing around on i he water. Skipper Andy Kropp was t pleased. Quot a regatta in a Light wind is stressful. You just sit in the boat but you want to go so you can win it Quot he said. The first German american regatta at Chi Emsee West Germany had gotten off to a late Start mainly because of the poor wind conditions. Nearly 50 boats had entered but the Field narrowed to 28 As the larger heavier boats dropped out before the Start. They would have been at a distinct disadvantage. The Mermaid and two other entries were from the armed forces recreation Center at Chi Emsee in Southern Bavaria. Arc Chi Emsee and the Bernau sail club at Felden co sponsored the event. I had never sailed before and when i was invited to join the Crew of the Mermaid a 36-foot Sloop i jumped at the Chance. I was in for a Surprise. Arc employee Ewen Cameron one of the organizers said several events Are held on the Lake each summer. But this one was intended to bring american and German sailors together for Friendly Competition and to give graduates of arc sailing classes a Chance to compete. Cameron skippered the Pride of arc s Small Fleet the Seppi. His Crew four former students consisted of Frank Heffner of the University of Maryland s Munich Campus Dieter Heim capt. Joe Morgan of Hohenfels and staff sgt. John Hanlon of Fulda. With the race nearly half Over the Mermaid sat in third place. The Seppi half the Lake away was also having problems with the Lack of wind but held second place. The Leader a boat from the Bernau club bore the number g-1860 on its tall Mainsail.
