European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 22, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Anri Landers dear Ann Landers in a writing about the woman who complained because her doctor charged her $50 to look at her toes when she had come in for Collagen injections to smooth out facial wrinkles. She was willing to pay $253 for the Collagen which is strictly cosmetic but she resented the $50 charge for treating her athletes foot which is a real disease. As a practising dermatologist in Mon the Side of that Michigan doctor. I can to Tell you How Many times a patient has said to me a while in a Here let me show you not Long ago i treated a patients acne free of charge during an office visit for psoriasis. On the next two visits that patient asked me to Check several other areas of concern and then she asked me questions about her husbands medical problems. I finally got smart and decided to put an end to the freely adm. I now treat patients for the problem they come in about and if they want help with another problem Thev Nav for that one As Well. ?h.e.s., Omaha dear Omaha you would not believe the difference of opinion on this subject read on from Panama City Fla i find it difficult to believe that the letter you published about the dermatologist who charged a second fee for looking at the woman a toes was written by a patient. Ill bet it was written by a lawyer or his wife to make the medical profession look bad. I am an orthopaedic surgeon and i find it incredible that any physician would be so Money hungry. Floydada Texas if that woman took her car in to have it painted would she expect them to repair the transmission free Rockford ill the dermatologist who charged an extra $50 to look at the woman a toes is a Good example of what is wrong with the world today. It is called greed. When i go to a dentist he does no to charge pne fee for the upper jaw and another fee for the lower jaw. My ophthalmologist does no to charge me an extra fee if he looks at both eyes even though i came in because of a problem with Only one. It s disgraceful what has happened to the medical profession. Southfield Mich i know of no physician who would charge an extra $50 for simply looking Between a patients toes and writing a prescription for athletes foot. As a practising dermatologist i am ashamed of the behaviour of my colleague. Pittsburgh i was pleased to see the letter about the dermatologist who had the courage to charge an extra fee for an extra service. About two months ago a woman came in to have a Large unsightly mole removed from her face. The procedure took about 45 minutes. Then she asked if i would mind taking off a a few Little growths from her neck and shoulders. I said a not at All a and spent an additional 30 minutes taking off some Small moles. When she received her Bill and discovered that i had charged her an additional $50, she phoned me and used language i Haven to heard since i was in the Navy. The woman is in the retail business. I asked her what she would do if a customer came in to buy a dress and then saw a sweater she liked. There was a dead silence on the other end. She had Hung up on me. A few Days later i received a Check for the full amount and an apology. All we doctors have to sell is our expertise. Patients should be willing to pay us for it. Friday june 22, 1990 the stars and stripes Page 11 litters done to abuse my generosity Sitter asks even though our military communities provide us with a Fine Day care system for our children Many military couples leave their children with a Friend or neighbor during the Day. Many of these women Are marked but have no children of their own. It is on behalf of these women that i write this letter. If i am a Friend or neighbor with whom you leave your children a for Only an hour or so a please done to forget to pay me. Just because i do not have children of my own does not mean i enjoy watching yours for 11 Vav i May agree to watch your children for you As a favor and not expect to be paid. Please realize this applies Only to today unless otherwise agreed upon. Do w m a Quot a u0i vol lij7v/11 Lyu not expect me to do this a a Favory for you every time i agree to watch your children. Please do not constantly ask me to watch your children m the late evening or on weekends. I have a husband at Home with whom i would like to spend s?.mr to me alone-1we wanted to have children with us All of the time we would have some of our own. Please do not ask me to watch your children on Valentines Day mothers Day new years eve Etc. I understand you want to spend some time alone with your husband but again so do i. The military Community is full of teen age girls and boys who would love to baby sit for some extra pocket Money. Be sure to leave Clear written instructions for medications food clothing and naps with me before you leave. I am not a mind Reader and your children Are too Young to answer my questions. If i baby sit for you on a regular basis chances Are you will pay me less than you would a child development Center. I still deserve some simple common courtesies however. If you Are going to have to work late please let me know As soon As possible. If you plan to run errands before you return Home let me know what time you can be expected. I do not appreciate having to wait for you to come Home at your Leisure. It would be very Nice if you would ask me if i mind or if in fact i will be Able to stay that extra hour. Done to assume i have nothing better to do. I am just As eager to get Home at the end of my workday As you arc at the end of yours. Also done to forget to pay me for that extra time. I work for my Money the same As you. If you have a financial problem and cannot pay me on the agreed upon payday please Tell me ahead of time if possible. Otherwise i expect to be paid on time. It is very inconsiderate of you to expect me to wait several Days after payday to be paid. If i baby sit in your Home please remember this is a convenience for you and i am saving you the time and hassle of getting your children up and dressed and transporting them to Day care. It also keeps them from having to go out if the weather is bad or if they arc sick. It would be Nice if you would occasionally mention How much you appreciate this. Your husband is perfectly capable of watching the children. I see no reason Why 1 should have to watch your children if he has the Day off. My husband May not have the same Days olt As yours which Means there Are Days 1 am watching your children even though my husband is at Home. Do not assume that just because my husband is at Ploc primary leadership development course reformer or Graf that i have nothing better to do than watch your children or that in a not in a hurry to go Home. I have a life of my own and at least occasionally i like to be at Home by myself. In closing i would like to say that i enjoy being your Friend and neighbor. We share Many of the same trials and tribulations being so far away from Home and family. I would hate to have our Friendship jeopardized because of any hard feelings my generosity or your i consideration May cause. A name and location withheld ., world hunger gain readers concern i work in a High school cafeteria and see Many students bring a Good lunch to school from Home. I also see Many of these lunches go into the trash. I know that it is none of my business but this is a matter of great concern to me. When i was growing up i was very poor and my family did not have food or Money. Many times i was sent by my parents to look for food in the trash in order for us to survive and feed my Brothers and Sisters. There Are so Many families even in today a Day and age who Are dying from hunger who Are looking for food in places such As Africa Asia and Europe. But the country that May Surprise you the most is our country the United states which is so Rich but has thousands of people going hungry every Day. So please before you take this lunch which would be a Blessing for Many people from Home ask yourselves if you Are going to eat this lunch or throw it away. My biggest concern of All is that you students Are our future and will soon be making world decisions. Please help Stop world hunger today by not throwing your lunch away and by thinking of your actions. The reason i took this action is because i care so very much about you.
