European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 28, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Continued from Page 5 and study for hours the so called australian Tower in nearby Navarr Eria Square is probably More interesting. See photographs on Page 8. The Tower is about 15 feet tall and australians new sealanders and britons climb atop it and make belly Flop dives into their friends arms. Running with bulls is one thing. But this Man Euver recurs again and again like a Nightmare circus act without nets. The mates Down below have a pretty Good system for catching the belly flippers. But sometimes they miss. Pamplona appears to be on the must see list for people in that income bracket which is not noteworthy for sending its children into the military. Instead the children of these families go to Eastern schools and in the summer to Pamplona where they Are allowed to behave like scum because papa Hemingway says that s How things Are. These kids can be easily spotted and thus avoided look for their surfing oriented to shirts and big colourful shorts the same kind worn by Bandy leered retirees with Metal detectors. In theory any civilian can run with the bulls. Foo hardiness however is one of the rights military people give up. The precedent seems not to have been set yet but military lawyers Are of the general opinion that Bull gorings fall in the same category As severe sunburns a punishable under military Law a because with some common sense they Are after All avoidable. Some people actually visit Pamplona during the other 51 weeks out of the year. The City is near the Hilly Basque country of northeastern Spain and about 200,000 people ordinarily live there. Most it is said go out of town during the turbulent festival week. Pamplona was founded by a son of Pompey the roman general who lived 2,100 years ago. Charlemagne and his Friend Roland sacked the City in 778. Seven and a half centuries later Ignatius Loyola a Basque Nobleman was injured in a Battle at Pamplona found god and started the Jesuit order. He later became a Saint. Saint Fermin is the City s Patron. He died somewhere in France around the year 300. It is unknown whether he ran with the bulls. Stripes Magazine june 28, 1990
