Univ on Friday filed a formal Appeal to the Mcaa asking that it reconsider a july 20 ruling that bans univ from postseason play next season. The ruling ended a 13-year Battle involving the Mcaa univ and basketball coach Jerry Tarkanian. In 1977, the Mcaa placed univ on probation for two years and ordered Tarkanian suspended for two years for a series of violations. The University served the probation from 1977 to 1979, but Tarkanian obtained a court injunction preventing his suspension. Univ contends it took its punishment because it served the probation. The school tried do suspend Tarkanian but could not do so because of the court order which remains in effect today. The Mcaa said the new ban on postseason play was an alternate penalty for the 1977 offences because the court order prevented the Agency and the school from making Tarkanian serve the suspension. The univ Appeal contains 14 pages of written documentation and several pages of exhibits University Legal counsel Brad Booke said. The University sent 65 sets of the Appeal to the Mcaa on thursday and also sent one to each of 22 members of the Mcaa Council which is expected to hear the Appeal in october. Meanwhile big West conference athletic directors meeting at los Angeles on football matters said they would await the outcome of in Lvi a Appeal before deciding whether to ban the rebels from the conferences postseason basketball tournament. If the big West allows univ to compete in the league tournament while serving probation the conference would run the risk of losing its automatic Mcaa tournament berth if the rebels were to win.
