European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - August 25, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday August 25, 1990 the stars and stripes editor s note Ann Landers is on vacation. The following column is one of her favourites. She will be Back sept. 2. Dear Ann Landers i be been carrying a column you wrote on oct. 5, 1969. It helped improve my life. Please print it again for the next generation. Thank you. A . Mother dear . How Nice of you to let me know you profited from my column. Here a the repeat. Dear Ann Landers in this age of conflicting philosophies shifting standards and the emergence of what some choose to Call the new morality please Tell me How a person can differentiate Between right and wrong. By Ely Day i am beset by new conflicts. In a Frank in admitting i am utterly confused. Can you give me and others some words of guidance a dark Side of the Moon dear . Moon several weeks ago i heard a Sermon by or. Preston Bradley the pastor now emeritus of the Peoples Church of Chicago he discussed this very subject and in conclusion quoted or. Harry Emerson Fosdick a six Point test for deciding right from wrong. I asked or. Bradley if he would Send me his distilled Vemon and he did. A does the course of action you plan to follow seem logical and reasonable never mind what anyone else has to say. Does it makes sense to you if it does it is probably right. A does it pass the test of sportsmanship in other words if everyone followed this same course of action would the results be beneficial for All a where will your plan of action Lead How will it affect others what will it do to you a will you think Well of yourself when you look Back at what you have done a try to separate yourself from the problem. Pretend for one moment it is the problem of the person you most Admire. Ask yourself How that person would handle it. A hold up the final decision to the glaring Light of publicity. Would you want your family and friends to know what you have done the decisions we make in the Hope that no one will find out Are usually wrong. Dear Ann Landers Twenty five years ago my husband and 1 then newlyweds had an argument. I behaved in an immature manner and locked him out when he slammed the door and left to walk around the Block and a Cool he went to his Mother s House when he discovered i had bolted the door. She wanted to a teach me a lesson a so she talked him into staying there for five Days. In a glad to say we worked out the problem and i never again did anything so foolish. Last night in a half joking manner my Mother in Law reminded me of the incident in the presence of several relatives. She congratulated herself on being so Clever. I did not appreciate the a a publicity at this Tate Date. My husband thought it was pretty funny. Our son is being married this Spring. If his wife locks him out of the House How should i handle the situation if he should come Home to me a still learning dear . When children have arguments with their spouses they should be told a go Home and Settle it a parents who provide bed and Board under such conditions do their children no favor. They merely postpone the grow ing up process. Creators Syndicate Pago 11 to r 1 i Lauraj child care worker standards discussed i wish to protest changes in the ratings for child development employees. I started working at the Voge Hych child development Center in March 1987 As a ps2, haying three years experience in Day care in the states. I was promoted to ps4, child development program assistant and worked As Lead teacher for the 3 and 4-year-Olds for two years. Last october i was Given a promotion to ps5 step 3 and have been assisting in program developing and training at our after a total of six years experience in child development i no longer qualify for the Job i have been doing for three years As i do not have a College education. I have been reclassified As a cd2 care giver i h prior experience. Even with the Quot new training program available i could Only Hope to obtain a cd4 Lead teacher rating after a year or More. My family is due to leave on permanent change of stations the training is not an option for me. I will have to Start Over at our next Post if i choose to stay in the child development Field. Unfortunately private Day care pays much worse than military. I understand that my rate of pay cannot be taken from Here but the blow to my self esteem cannot be measured in dollars. For this reason i am leaving my Job sooner than necessary in protest of what 1 feel is the unfair handling of employees who have been on the Job have brought to it experience and maturity without a College education. Why Arentt employees with seniority grandfathered into the rating and jobs they have been doing for years the air Force is going to lose a lot of Good people in its child development centers. A Jerri i. Harrison a a a a. A Kaiserslautern West Germany editor s note a Jayne Abshire child development specialist he Safe or replies the military child care act is bringing Many changes o our child development centers. One of these changes involved a substantial increase in the hourly wages of All care givers. When this was approved it established a career advancement program for this important Job category linking wages to professional training and Job skills. We realize that some excellent care givers who have been working As room leaders in the past now do not qualify for those same positions under this new grading Standard. At the present time grandfathering of employees is not available. If it should become an option for Long term excellent employees we believe it Wilt be established a requirement to Complete the mandated training within Given time frames. There Are several systems now available to enable All care givers to Advance in their chosen Field even without grandfathering. An associate s degree program in Early childhood education is available through the education office and an in depth on the Job training program is also a part of each Center s training plan for employees. These programs Are available throughout the air Force. Therefore if you begin a training program Here you can continue in the same system when you return to the United states. You will not be starting Over again. The idea behind the military child care act was to make excellence in care available at every base and that can Best be done through uniform training programs combined with higher wages. Your past experience could add tremendously to any child development Center program and it would also help you quickly move through the new training system that will professionalize and give Long overdue recognition to the child care Field. We will be sorry to see you leave this rewarding career. Thoughts on Freedom of ideas expressed i am sick and tired of it. Every time i open the Page in the newspaper there is always someone crying about what someone else is doing. There was the big Deal with doonesbury and his Radical views. Now this week he s having dress up with just some rope around Quot Here and there and a pail on her head. I can t wait to hear from All those people who will claim its pornography. Then there was the big stink about the burning of the Flag Issue hey i done to agree with burning the Flag but that does no to give me the right to suppress someone else a feelings. That a not part of what the Flag stands for. Now there a the big Deal with witchcraft and christianity. Now i believe that there is nothing wrong with what you believe in but done to go casting stones on other people just because they re different. Or maybe you Are the different one. In a sorry but in a not ready to get Gray hairs ulcers and High blood pressure just because someone Isnit just like me. One last thing if you look on Page 10 of the aug. 6 stars and stripes notice one stressing Point All the supporters of witchcraft believe every religion is acceptable while those christians have to condemn anyone out of their religion. In a sure in a going to hear quite a few com ments both Good and bad from my co workers but you know what i done to mind it at All.
