European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 3, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday september 3, 1990 the stars and stripes a a a Page 11 letters loud music grates on Soldier in Barrack Sann Landers dear readers a while Back i got hot and heavy into the relative merits of bats. Bat lovers by the thousands insisted that the Nirry creatures had gotten a bum rap and sprang to their defense. Bats ended up looking pretty Good. Then wrote in about his hair raising experience with a fruit Bat in Austin Texas. Once again i am being bombarded with letters defending bats. Read on and draw your own conclusions. Dear Ann Landers there Are no bats in Austin Texas except those in the zoo. Healthy animals do not bite unless provoked. In the animal world As in forms of higher life there Are it is entirely possible that an occasional Bat goes crazy and bites. That nightmarish rabies treatment of 21 shots in the stomach is outmoded. They now have a far More efficient treatment that involves Only three shots that can be taken in the Arm. You have a great Deal of influence Ann. It is unfortunate that you have chosen to perpetuate the Western stereotype of the Bat As evil. In China bats Are a Symbol of happiness and Prosperity. Symbolism aside bats do much less harm than Good. They eat billions of insects and pollinate useful plants such As agave bananas avocados cashews figs cloves mangos guavas and others. I Hope you will take the time to Leam about bats from a reputable source instead of relying on emotional invective. I suggest that you Contact Bat conservation International in Austin Texas. A Anonymous dear anon thanks for your testimonial on behalf of bats. Bat conservation International has already contacted me. However i have received numerous clippings about a Man in Austin Texas who was bitten by a fruit Bat and died. While we have different opinions on this subject rest assured this is the last time i will mention bats for a very Long time. Dear Ann Landers Here a a message to every person who May be facing chemotherapy for cancer with dread and panic. I certainly did. All those horror stories about the terrible Side effects a a ainu to necessarily after a Radical Mastectomy for an advanced Case of breast cancer my doctor said i needed chemotherapy. I was terrified. Believe me there was no need to be. I was Able to carry on with almost no interruption of Normal activities. There were no nightmarish Side effects and very Little physical discomfort. Now after a year in the Clear i am experiencing a slight recurrence that is not unexpected considering the extent of the original involvement. I am being treated most successfully with a simple medication that causes me no discomfort whatsoever. Yesterday my doctor an oncologist said that she wishes someone would spread the word that there is no reason to dread and fear chemotherapy. I decided that i would be that person. And while in a at it i want to express my gratitude to the dedicated scientists and doctors who have saved and prolonged so Many lives by making these treatments effective and available. . Sarasota Fla. Dear Sarasota it should make you feel Good to know that you have eased Many a heart today. You May also have saved some lives. Some people who could be saved by chemotherapy refuse to take it because they Are terrified of the Side effects. It should be noted however that not everyone reacts to chemotherapy in the same Way. While attitude is extremely important some folks do have a very rough time. I would like to address a subject very near and dear to the ears of Many Barracks dwellers a noise pollution. I am talking about the insensitivity of an overwhelming number of soldiers who deem it their inalienable right to assault the rest of us with their version of a a music at All hours of the Day and night. And i am also addressing the problem of soldiers driving up to the Barracks with their car stereos blasting loud raucous often offensive noise. This is a real problem not just the complaint of one disgruntled individual. The blasting of loud noise with no regard to fellow soldiers is just a symptom of a larger problem a Basic Lack of respect for the rights of other people. This i fear is a societal problem born of the various political movements of the ?T60s and ?T70s. When the previous generation demonstrated for recognition of their personal rights and liberties they Only managed to pass on to their children the ideas of the privileges that go along with those rights not the responsibilities. So Many americans currently serving As first term soldiers were Only taught that no one can infringe upon their rights. No one taught them to carry the thought process through to the conclusion that this also Means they cannot infringe on someone else a rights. They Only see the world As How it affects them they cannot see How their actions affect the world. I realize that very few of the soldiers who Are guilty of my opening charges will read the editorial Page and see this letter. Fewer still will recognize their actions As those i have described. That too is part of the problem the a a it a not me its the other Guy syndrome. I Well Here we go again. The Good old . Picks up the Tab this time for trying to protect part of the worlds source of Oil. Its bad enough that we have to Send in the majority of troops and equipment but we have to pay for it All too. Done to misunderstand me i fully agree that we need to do what we Are doing in the persian Gulf but Why can to we get help financially from countries like Japan West Germany and other Oil dependent nations whose economies Are stronger than ours in a aware that some countries Are offering support for an economic blockade Basing rights and even troops and equipment and ships but that a not enough. The United states May be approaching an economic recession yet we continue to give away Money at the drop of a hat. I think its time Washington stops giving the world a free ride and countries like Japan West Germany and others pay their fair share of desert shield. A maj. Martin c. Alvstad Ramstein a West Germany As students of military history stationed in Germany we find the Iraq situation most intriguing. The Arab worlds strongmen have been a Thorn in the Side of the United states for Well Over a decade hostages terrorism aircraft shootings. During a discussion of current events we considered solutions to the crisis arising from the iraqi invasion of Kuwait. We tried to imagine How Iraq Iran Libya and Lebanon would react to a joint invasion of Iraq. First and Foremost the red army in Europe is in need of employment. The red army chiefs have a dim View of Gorbachev a current military policies. The so would still make my plea in the Hope that one Soldier pays attention and turns his stereo Down without cd threatening to lock it up or the maps writing a citation for reckless driving. Fellow Soldier you have the right to listen to what you consider music no matter How offensive or obscene i find it. I would never advocate censorship though i will not Call most of the thumping and swearing music. Self expression yes music no. I have the right though to not hear it coming through the Walls or ceiling at 11 . Or at 5 30 on a saturday morning. You have a right to practice your electric guitar or Bass in order to Leam to play it. 1 have the right to object to hearing you do so at 3 or at any other time after quiet hours. You have a right to play whatever you want on your car stereo. I have a right to ask you to turn it Down when you Are parked in front of the Barracks after you have been partying with your friends. When you drive up and your stereo drowns out the television playing at level 20 in my room you Are too loud. I am not a grouch or any obscene word you would care to substitute. I am a Soldier with the same rights As you and you Are infringing upon mine. Please Leam to exercise discretion even As you exercise your rights. This is How a country such As ours stays together. If everyone a does his own thing a without regard for anyone else we arc no longer a one nation under god a but a Bunch of disrespectful twerp harming each other and ourselves. A spec. Sherry l. Paugh bad Kreuz Nach West Germany Viet army cannot withdraw from Europe and go Home because there is nothing at Home for them to do. Military action in the Middle East would give the red army a sense of purpose something to keep the generals minds on military matters and out of politics. The soviets also have much to offer to a multinational invasion of Iraq. Since they supplied the iraqi army and sent advisers there they possess knowledge that would be invaluable to the invasion Effort. The soviets have a 70-year-old treaty with Iran to intervene militarily if needed which they ignored they sided with Iraq during Iran Iraq War. They could argue that they have seen the error of their ways and turn on the renegade Saddam Hussein. Second the soviet Union could secure a portion of the economic benefits gained from the re established flow of iraqi Oil. They would also be Able to draw Down some of their weaponry through expenditure in Iraq. War is always a Good solution to a failing Economy. Third a message can be sent to our Host country by the superpowers. The germans Are very Lucky to be United with their Eastern Brothers and Sisters. The soviet Union and the United states will not tolerate another Rise in Neo nazism. The soviets and the United states Are both about to reduce their forces stationed in Germany. Iraq represents an interesting alternative As a future a Host nation a and gives both nations the Opportunity to demonstrate their United resolve to combat International aggression.
