Often it is easier to symbolize than define. Venice is canals and crumbling palaces. San Francisco is Hills and Cable cars. Florence is red tile roofs and Renaissance artworks. Salzburg Austria also has its visual symbols a Hilltop fortress Mountain vistas baroque churches Broad cafe lined squares. But perhaps More than any other City except Vienna Salzburg s mystique is also symbolized by music. Many americans know Salzburg As the sound of music City. But the City s musical heritage goes a lot deeper than the Julie Andrews classic. More than 150 years before the von Trapp family s flight from the nazis inspired the 1965 film the City on the Sal Zach River was renowned As the Birthplace of its most celebrated citizen Wolfgang amadeus Mozart. With 140,000 residents it is far Down the list of major european cities in terms of population. But culturally it is a giant. Venice has the paintings of Titian Paul Veronese and Tintoretto. Florence has Michelangelo s David. But Salzburg has Mozart s magic flute and Prague symphony. Archaeologists have dated the history of Salzburg to the Early Stone age. Later it was a roman settlement named Juva Vum and it achieved its greatest importance under the Prince Bishops of the holy roman Empire. But it is difficult to imagine the City s standing today if that one Man Mozart had been born somewhere else. Today the Mozart connection is evident throughout much of the City. Both the House at Petrei Degassed 9 where the great composer was born in 1756 and the family s residence at Makar Platz 8 have been converted to min museums. The Mozart memorial created by sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler gazes across Mozar Platz. In addition to the monuments and museums a number of annual festivals concerts and music competitions underscore the City s Mozart connection. Since the 1920s it has hosted one of the world s Premier musical events the Salzburg festival which is dominated by Mozart s works.
