European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 7, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Friday september 7, 1990 the stars and stripes a Page 11 letters gis face Twilight of Post Post War Toneann Landers dear Ann Landers i have read your column since i was in Junior High and i think you can get a Point across better than anyone in America. What has happened to Good manners we live in a society of pigs. People eat with their Mouths open slurp soup and pick their Teeth at the table. My friends say in a too fussy. Actually in a sick to my stomach. In be tried to bring up my daughters to be ladies. I Tell them a Chew with your Mouth closed and either done to pop your gum or get rid of i would like to know Ann How can a person enjoy a meal in a restaurant when someone at the next table is belching out loud is it super sensitive to become disgusted when the person seated next to me on a bus is eating cherries and spitting the pits on the floor in be been in meetings filled with professionals and heard women chomping on Peanut Brittle and men cracking nuts with their Teeth. How about Heaters where the Popcorn crunching is so loud that you can to pay attention to the movie Ana have you seen the trash they throw on the floor the phone is a real thrill. People think nothing of munching an Apple smacking gum or my personal favorite blowing their nose without covering the phone or even bothering to say a excuse what has happened to our society that we have become such linkers a nauseous in Venice dear Venice your letter implies that we Are less polite than we used to be. I doubt that this is True. Slobs have been around for a Long time. With a Little Effort on the part of parents we could help the next generation do a whole lot better. I heartily recommend it. Dear Ann Landers my brother and i were raised by a woman who should never have had children. I have not spoken to nor seen my Mother in 10 years nor do i Ever expect to see or talk to her again. It is my Choice. My reason is not to get even but self preservation. If i am to restore my self esteem and heal from the pain she has caused i must stay away from her. You should have told a Colum Bush the woman who hated her Mother that she is at the beginning of a Long Road Back from hell. Her Mother did indeed leave her a legacy. My legacy is that i am a recovering alcoholic 22 months sober and i must work hard to convince myself that i am not All the awful things she said i was. A Colum Bush should know that reprogramming is where most of the work is. I have to learn to Trust not Only others but my own judgment As Well. When someone tells me i am intelligent and accomplished it seems As if they Are talking about someone else. At the age of 42,1 am just now learning to let go of the anger towards my Mother because of what she did to me. The destruction this woman wreaked on the lives of her children is incredible. It has taken me this Long not to hate her and now i am at the stage where i can finally let go. I am Light years away from forgiving her but i Hope that someday i will be Able to do that too. If i can come out of this healthy in mind body and spirit i will be equipped to handle anything that life dishes out. I say a Good Luck to a Columbus a and now be Good to yourself a things can Only get better. You la have to work Damn hard but believe me it will be Worth it. A free at last in Bakersfield. Dear bake congratulations you re almost there. Thanks for encouraging i Hope it helps. Creators Syndicate having spent the last six months Reading about impending troop cuts and the last few weeks pondering the Gulf deployment the following scenario began to ferment in my mind. Picture this if you will. The Sun beats Down on the shifting Sand As the soldiers sit broiling in the relentless heat. A disperse secure and re disperse a those had been the initial orders however their battalion had been dug in along the same stretch of Sand for weeks now. It had become a War of nerves the shimmering Brown expanses playing tricks on their eyes. One Man walks slowly from position to position pausing to talk to the men. His Abc suit is sweat stained and covered with a Fine layer of Sand. His face is blackened and leathery from the desert Sun the creases around his eyes deeply etched from endless hours of squinting into the glaring emptiness. As he smiles at one of the menus comments the creases become laugh lines and his some mess seems to have been an illusion. This is sgt. 1st class Bud platoon sergeant Friend confidant 10 k runner Champion Chili chef and most importantly front line Leader. He is a Calm reassuring Man who has been a there a in fact he seven been Here before. He is on the one hand compassionate and caring to his men and on the other demanding and relentless in their training. His platoon is motivated and dedicated and trusts in him beyond anything they could put into words. His platoon Leader the first sergeant and even the commanding officer depend on him More than they realize. He is the perfect combat no. He is rambo without the bulging Muscles without the snarl and at 39, without the hair. He and so Many others like him rate top Billing along with the f-14 As the bad Guys worst Nightmare. Sergeant Bud deployed at a strapping 180 pounds. After three months in the sweatsuit they term a a protective suit a there is Only 145 pounds left of the once formidable figure. He can to remember being this thin this letter is being written for All the minority members of the United states military. We consistently complain that we Are not Given the same Chance to Advance As Are our non minority counterparts. That is True to a Large extent. Yet we fail to realize that we should accept some of the blame for that also. There Are Many minorities who have achieved their goals of advancement but have also managed to forget a where they came Many minorities have failed to realize that the struggle to achieve is still going on for us at the Bottom of the totem pole. The a i got mine you get yours mentality seems to have taken hold in Many of our senior minority personnel. Its enough to make you give up on Many things including your own race. Even in High school. He smiles thinking about what his wife will have to say about this new improved a clean mean fighting he Waits patiently As the mail clerk sorts through the bag. Picking up the platoons mail has become his favorite activity. Better than Chow time a res and to rats have begun to taste like reconstituted cardboard a and even better than the weekly sprinkling the Shower and Bath platoon is passing Oft for a Shower. Mail Call brings some pleasure to his platoon and he gets to be the one to deliver it. As he shuffles through the pile of envelopes he finds a department of the army a official looking letter addressed to him. He walks away from the others to open it. A personnel manipulation Branch soldiers first a sergeant Bud dropped the letter. He Felt the ground moving beneath him As chills ran up his arms. He instinctively reached for his Salt tablets blaming his disoriented state on dehydration and heat trauma. Welcome sergeant Bud to the Post Post War zone a place lying on the Periphery Between the . Defense umbrella the budget deficit and the Twilight zone. Salt tablets wont help Here. A Michelle franc Mohringer West Germany no one person has Ever made his goals a reality without assistance from someone. So Why is it so difficult to remember that one person who afforded you the Chance to move up and out so what if it was 15 or 20 years ago i was under the impression that soldiers looked out for their people. Guess i was wrong huh Well this experience in Germany has taught me one important lesson and the rap group Public enemy put it Best a a brother is not a brother cause of his so All you so called Brothers need to remember what our parents suffered for not just for you to succeed and forget All others but for us All to help one another in achieving our goals. If Unity is the key then i suppose it is Safe to say that we have broken it off in the door. A name withheld Berlin pen pals. V a a a Quot. It i would like to have pen pals from other countries.
