European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 17, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday september 17, 1990 the stars and stripes a a a Page 11 letters a Reader questions a fest discard policy in regard to a fest reply to its throwaway policy a stale bread makes wonderful French Toast bread pudding bread crumbs and dressing a foods that Are nutritious and require very few other products to make them delicious. Some Cooks allow their fresh bread to become stale in order to prepare these delights. If i Purchase your half Price products they will continue to be used by my family for at least a few Days after which time i throw it out for the Birds. The Point being the food is still Good and usable although the Date May have expired. A in our time waste of any of natures Bounty is reprehensible. There Are people starving malnourished and simply unable to afford some of the things that we have a and they re not All in a a other places some Are in every Community. A this is not the Only thing that cafes wastes although it is the most glaring. Example about a year and a half ago while walking my dog and looking in the Exchange dumpster for a Box for mailing i found two ski suits thrown out from the sports shop a both still with Price tags a almost $300 each. A military attorney in Munich told me that under Ordinary Law property placed inside a dumpster is considered abandoned property and anyone May have it one of the suits we had repaired for $10 at the tailor shop and you cannot see the repair unless i Point it out. The other needs a Zipper. I can Only go by Rumor from Exchange employees As to what goes into the dumpster behind the Fence there Are other examples of this fraud waste and abuse. This however is not Only a letter of complaint it is also an offer for a solution. I am willing to be personally responsible for picking up and distributing any us Able items from cafes or the commissary in my Community. We have shelters for the homeless refugee centers Farmers nearby who feed their animals and my neighbors and i who make French Toast bread pudding bread crumbs and dressing. I am also willing for volunteers in other communities who Are also concerned about our wasteful practices to write to me and i will work with cafes to have a waste control Volunteer in each american Community. So at the very least please cafes put a free Box in your stores for products that you plan to put into the dumpster a your trash is indeed someone else a treasure. And done to just Tell me that you can to give things away. If you can throw them away you can give them away. And if there is a Law that prohibits this let us know about it there Are enough of us who care and can write letters to legislators to have this kind of senseless policy changed. We have to take care of this wonderful Earth and what it produces. God did not give us our Bounty to waste but charged us to be responsible stewards. Putting a loaf of bread in an a Decomposable plastic bag in a Landfill is not a solution to our environmental or wasteful problems. Putting that food into someone a stomach is a Rev. Cheryl Rhodes Munich West Germany editors note a master sgt. Dayton p. Strickland customer relations he cafes Europe replies we Are delighted we were Able to provide excess bread to you to distribute to the needy. As for our throwaway policy it has always been to offer these items to the Chapel and other Community organizations first before throwing them out. Man Landers dear Ann Landers i am concerned about my sister. She is 51 and i am afraid she is going to drop dead one of these Days trying to have a figure like the movie Star on the workout video. The woman eats like a Bird and whenever i Call her she is a a Busy doing her exercises. A miss Shadow of her former self a has had the following a a face lift b an upper Arm reduction the flab Cut off c breast implants d a nose Job e her ears tacked Back t a Tummy tuck g liposuction on her thighs h her Rump lifted i two ribs removed so she could have a 22-Inch Waist sure she looks terrific but she did no to get her figure from the lord or from working out. She got it from surgery. I am worried sick about what she will have done to herself next. What can i do to help her a worried in California dear worried any woman who goes in for that much cosmetic surgery is pathologically obsessed with her face and figure and nothing you say or do will make any difference. I suggest that you put your energies into something that will make you feel Good about yourself like maybe a video workout dear Ann Landers five years ago i gave birth to triplets. My husband and i beamed for three months. We were so proud to be the parents of two Beautiful girls and an adorable boy. But our Joy turned to sorrow when our son passed away unexpectedly sudden infant death syndrome. I done to believe we will Ever recover from the loss. The girls started school this year and now More than Ever i am asked the question that just tears me apart a Are they twins a sometimes i answer a yes they Are twins a and later i feel a Rush of guilt for denying the existence of our Little son. Other times i say a no they Are triplets a which of course leads to the logical question a a where a the third a i then must explain and it is painful especially when the questioner is a total stranger to whom i owe nothing. Can you suggest a response that would make both of us feel Good i need to know not Only for myself but for my girls who will also have to face this question throughout their lives. Thanks for your guidance Ann. A hurting in new Jersey dear new Jersey simply say a there were three but one died in if More questions follow such As a what happened a and you would rather not go into detail say a if you done to mind it hurts to talk about Only a clod would press for More information after that. My laugh for the Day a youngster had just returned Home from his first Long camping trip with the boy scouts. His doting Mother who had missed him terribly asked whether or not he had become homesick. A no a the boy replied. A the Only kids who got homesick were the ones with dogs Back reservist rank discussed i have a question concerning the use of military rank in non military positions. Recently an individual enlisted in the reserves joined our department. This person uses his Reserve rank on All correspondence and in introductions and he attaches it to the title he holds in the office even though his position is a civilian position. Our office is in no Way connected to the military. I believe that no one else questions this because they Are unfamiliar with military customs. Can he do this a name and location withheld editors note a maj. Stan l. Warrick action officer office of the Deputy chief of staff personnel he usareur/7th army replies Reserve component members not serving on Active duty May use their military titles in connection with commercial enterprises provided they indicate their Reserve status. However the use of military titles by Reserve members is prohibited if it any Way casts discredit on the army or the department of defense or gives the appearance of sponsorship Sanction endorsement or other approval by the army or defense department. It is also improper for Reserve component members to attempt to misrepresent their status by the use of their military title while not on Active duty. Of course in your office which you state is in no Way connected with Dod the employer or office manager May establish office standards for correspondence and office related communications which could preclude the use of Reserve military rank.
