The place to Start a tour of Veale is at the City s most important historical building the 13th-Century St. Nicholas Church. It is located on de Ningen Street i few blocks Inland from the Harbor. Like Many buildings in Veale St. Nicholas red Brick exterior gives it an austere look. High up in the Church s North Wall 23 shallow scooped out hollows Are visible to an uninformed tourist they Are merely unexplained curiosities. But after consulting a Guidebook the visitor takes a closer look. Only then does the recognition Factor come into play the vaguely familiar shape the faint spider web cracks. These Are human skulls. Local legend says the Church s grisly ornamentation came from 23 thieves who were executed in the Early 17th Century. An equally gruesome but archaeologically fascinating display dominates the Interior of the Church. The shrivelled Parchment like body of an Iron age woman displayed on White Linen in an Imperial coffin is located in the Middle of the Church on the North Side. Found in a peat bog in 1835, the Corpse has been Carbon dated to about 500 . And is considered one of the most important archaeological finds in Denmark. From St. Nicholas Church it is Only one Block to Veale s downtown pedestrian shopping area. The half mile Long stretch includes three streets Sonder Gade Torve Gade and Norre Gade. There Are clothing shops department stores pastry shops and restaurants As Well As More upscale businesses like jewelry and antique shops. Street musicians ice Cream kiosks and record stores add a Youthful flavor. It is interesting browsing but except for food or souvenirs americans will probably want to forgo most purchases. The surrounding half timbered buildings Shade Trees and an outdoor cafe provide a pleasant setting to pore Over brochures and guidebooks. As if in confirmation of danish ecological awareness one Block a Down the Street the Sonder River flows Clear and unpolluted through the main business District. The Central landmark in the old City is the City Hall a massive Post gothic style Structure built on the site of a former monastery. Outside the City Center one spot Worth visiting is the Windmill museum. The first Mill on the site was built in 1847, but the present Structure was built in 1890, after the original burned today it is used to demonstrate How wind Power was used to Mill Grain. With its distinctive conical shape and pitched Blades it is the unofficial City Emblem. It sits atop a Hill on the Southern Edge of the City affording a Superb panoramic View of the surrounding Countryside. Also on the outskirts of the City a along the shores of the fiord a Are Many Small Parks and White Sand beaches. The tourist office can provide maps and directions. If you travel by car there Are several attractions near Veale that make fun Day trips for the whole family. Lego land is Only 18 Miles away in Lillund and lion Park Only 12 Miles out. On sundays in july and Early Augusta steam train makes round trips from Veale to jelling about 10 Miles away. The town is famous As the site of two Viking burial Mounds and 1,000-year-old runic stones. Travellers who enjoy Active vacations will find the surrounding Hills and valleys of East Jutland excellent for hiking biking fishing and other outdoor activities.
