European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 12, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse A s sweep red so Stewart pitches Oakland to 3rd straight Al title Oakland Calif. Apr first the umpires got rid of Roger Clemens. Then the rest was easy for Dave Stewart and the Oakland athletics. They swept the Boston red sox for the american league Pennant and their third straight trip to the world series. Stewart followed up his first game heroics with an even better Effort beating Boston 3-1 wednesday and winning for the eighth straight time in head to head matchup with Clemens. Clemens trailed 1-0 when All hell broke Loose in the second inning. After missing on a close 3-1 pitch to Willie Randolph Clemens began shaking his head. Clemens version of what happened next a i was looking Down. I saw his Throat guarding moving so he was saying something. He thought i was taking it to Cooney a version a the stood on the Mound shaking his head like he was disgusted. I did no to take my mask off. Clemens and Cooney began arguing. Cooney said Clemens yelled several expletives Clemens said he did not. A i was fully cognizant that this was a big game. I thought several times about ejecting him before i did a Cooney said. Then As Boston manager Joe Morgan ran on the Field Cooney thrust his fist in the air. But Clemens stood placidly on the Mound. It did no to realize it was me at first a Clemens said. Quot then our Bench Clemens charged the plate and a few red sox players coaches and Morgan tried to intercept Clemens. He pushed past and even shoved Umpire Jim Evans in an see Oakland on Page 23 ales Dave Stewart fires away in the decisive fourth ejected in 2nd inning for cursing ump from press dispatches Oakland Calif. A Roger Clemens pitching got him in trouble and his Mouth got him thrown out in the quickest and arguably least deserved ejection in playoff history. The fiery Boston Pitcher flamed out of the Al playoffs in a rage wednesday Long before the rest of the red sox succumbed to a four game sweep by the Oakland athletics. Cursing and screaming in frustration at the Home plate Umpire after getting thrown out in the second inning Clemens had a couple of hours to Cool Down while his teammates went on to lose game 4. Adding to Clemens misery the Winner once again was Dave Stewart the Man who beat him in game 1 and in seven of their eight showdowns since 1984. Clemens stood on the Mound preparing to pitch and swearing at Home plate Umpire Terry Cooney when Cooney bolted from behind the plate and said head had enough abuse. He tossed the Pitcher setting off one of baseball a most nefarious scenes in the playoffs since Oakland Sbert Campaneria threw a Bat at a Detroit Pitcher Ler Rin Lagrow in the 1972 playoffs. Cooney Hadnot formally warned Clemens or indicated that the Pitcher might be on the Edge of ejection. Instead the big Burly Umpire stepped around the plate and signalled the disbelieving Clemens out of the game with a flick of his thumb. Cursing umpires can be cause enough for ejection but pitchers have said More and stayed longer than Clemens in less significant games. According to the associated press one of their film messengers John Peale was stationed behind the Fence in Back of the batters Box.
