European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 20, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Ahn Landers dear Ann Landers i am 30 years old and have been Reading your column since i was a teen Ager. I have never been angry enough to write until now. I want to say that i am totally fed up with women who snipe at other women for choosing to work rather than stay at Home with their children. As a Mother and a teacher i can Tell you that staying at Home does not always ensure Good parenting. The Well adjusted children i have taught have had both stay at Home moms and working moms. The same is True of problem children. I have decided that this will be my last year of teaching for a while. I done to believe this proves i love my child More than a working Mother loves hers nor does it prove that i am a better Parent. The truth is however i can no longer Cope with the physical exhaustion of holding Down two full time jobs. At the same time i Admire the stamina of women who can. Without them we would not have enough teachers nurses social workers Etc. The doctor who delivered my son is a working Mother. There have been times when i done to know what i would have done without her compassion and support. I do not feel however that these women Are i detest that. Term. Without the stay at Home moms Many working mothers would not have full time baby Sitters or transportation for their children to and from school. Nor would they have someone to Call in Case of an emergency. For generations women have been fighting for the right to choose. Too often the ones who make us feel guilty for the choices we made Are other women. When will women realize that they have become their own worst enemy we will never be treated with the respect and Equality we deserve until we Start treating each other decently. The feminists who blame men for their inability to get ahead in the world Are Barking up the wrong tree. Just sign me tired of the backbiting in Hamilton Ontario dear tired of the backbiting that makes two of us. You would not believe the mean spirited letters i receive from women lambasting their Sisters who choose to stay at Home with their children. Barbara Bush did a magnificent Job of putting these types in their place when in her commencement address at Wellesley she praised homemaking As a Noble profession. Her comment really settled their hash. Dear Ann Landers some dear friends of ours Are going through a very difficult time. Last year their teen Ager was killed in an Auto Accident. Grief has taken its toll on everybody especially the child smother. She wants no affection or sexual attention from her husband. She says she feels completely dead inside. To casual observers their relationship appears to be quite Normal the husband has confided that he misses the physical Side of marriage and feels that it is time to resume that part of their life. My question is it Normal to Grieve for so Long and to deny the one person who could be a Comfort the husband has recovered from the tragedy and is now ready for the relationship they once had. His wife a distancing has made him feel rejected. I am worried about their marriage. Please comment. No name of course Dea Noname there is no set time for grieving. Some people heal faster than others. I do feel however that this woman needs grief counselling and i Hope that she will get it soon. C creators Syndicate saturday october 20, 1990 the stars and stripes Page 11 letters a elephant killing policy raises concern i am writing concerning a recent article about How game Rangere m South Africa killed 248 elephants. It said something about preventing a a population it would have been helpful if the writer could have explained what a a population crash is and what it would been kind elephant As a species had they not tj1 . Customs program manager for my installation i have put a lot or time and Effort into supporting iss p0rt 5an according to the current Pam a a gered and threatened wildlife issued by of a i ? an it wildlife service Jan. 1, 1989, the african elephant is a threatened species and the Ivory import ban soon to be worldwide i hear if not already was imposed to Stop the poaching of elephants. Reading this article without sufficient explanation for the reasons behind the killings infuriated met Why should i waste my time and the time of my mics military customs inspectors by identifying illegal imports of k africans themselves Slaughter their herds it by Chance there were too Many in that one area Why not Transfer them to an area Able to support them if this is not possible in a sure there must be other alternatives than to kill them. My next question is what is going to happen to All that Ivory will it be destroyed or will it be just left on the animals for the poachers to obtain and to make a Quick last Buck before the Ivory Market completely closes with All the publicity about the decreasing population of the african elephant in a sure not to be the Only person enraged a tech. Sol Dale Wear Raf upper Heyford England editors note a we received two replies to this letter. The first is from Samuel h. Banks assistant commissioner office of commercial operations . Customs service effective june 9,1989, the United states established a ban on the importation of Ivory from All countries under the african elephant conservation act of 1988. This ban of african elephant Ivory became worldwide in october 1989. However a few african countries including South Africa do not Honor the ban. These countries claim that their elephant population is growing. Since Many of the questions raised in your correspondence can Only be answered by South Africa your letter is also being forwarded to the embassy of South Africa. We have not received an answer from that embassy. A editor j editors note a the second reply is from Michael Sutton program officer the conservation foundation world wildlife fund the writer of the letter you enclosed expresses his concern about the killing of african elephants by government officials in South Africa. This controversial practice is known As a a culling or a a cropping of elephants and it is conducted from time to time by the wildlife departments of South Africa and Zimbabwe to control what they consider excessively Large elephant herds. While commercial poaching for Ivory has decimated elephant populations across much of Africa there arc still Large healthy herds in Southern Africa. Zimbabwe is estimated to Harbor approximately 52,000 elephants and Botswana has about 68,000. There Are Only 7,800 elephants in South Africa but they Are confined to the area of Kruger National Park and private game ranches around the Park. Government officials in those countries say they need to cull certain numbers of elephants periodically to keep the herds from Over populating and damaging their habitats. Prior to Early 1990, the elephant Ivory and skins derived from government culling operations were sold on the International Market to help defray the Cost of wildlife management. The meat was sold to Crocodile farms or Given to local villagers. However since the International ban on commercial Trade in elephant products was imposed in january of this year the markets for these products have collapsed. Five nations in Southern Africa including those mentioned above have refused to go along with the ban. They feel strongly that wildlife must be Given economic value to make conservation worthwhile. But at present they can find no Market for their Ivory and perhaps coincidentally no culling operations Are known to have taken place this year. Southern african governments arc stockpiling Ivory in Hopes that the International ban will someday be lifted and Legal trading in elephant products can resume. In summary while it is True that some african governments conduct culling operations to reduce the size of their Large elephant herds this practice is controversial and is not widespread. It is impractical to translocate elephants on any Large scale As is being done with the Rhinoceros in Zimbabwe. The Ivory that is generated by culling operations is being held in secure government warehouses. Certainly this practice is no reason for your writer or his military customs inspectors to be any less vigilant for prohibited Trade in items made from Ivory. The International ban on Ivory Trade is our Best Hope to safeguard african elephants from the disastrous effects of poaching and the Trade ban will Only work if it is rigorously enforced.
