Bureau the lovable characters of miss Piggy Kermit the Frog cookie monster and Oscar the Crouch Are sharing some space at London s museum of the moving image with the formidable looking ritual master see kiss from the dark Crystal during a special exhibit of the work of their creator Jim Henson. The exhibit is a retrospective look at some of Henson s first creations such As the sesame Street and muppet show characters to some of his More recent work for the movie teenage mutant ninja turtles and a Trio of mice used in the witches. The exhibition had been planned before the sudden death of the 53-year-old puppeteer May 16. A collage of some of Henson s work greets visitors to the world of Jim Henson. In the midst of the collage is a photo of a smiling Henson with Kermit the Frog flanked by two human size Alice in wonderland characters a the mad Hatter and the Hare a created for the film dream child. Donatello one of the teenage mutant ninja turtles created by Henson s creature shop in London Peers Over the top while a couple of the tinier versions of the turtles used in the movie Are at the mad Hatter s feet. Many of the creatures used in Henson s fantasy films and television shows such As the dark Crystal and the storyteller were produced by the artists and craftsmen of Henson s creature shop. For the past 11 years the workshop has been Busy crafting the creatures that Are brought to life with High tech an i Matron is. A Good Many of the works on display were created in the creature shop. And at least one seems to Spring into action. Visitors to the museum one recent sunday were intrigued by the flaring nostrils the blinking eyes quivering lips and rising eyebrows of a minotaur s head on display. Although onlookers tried to find the controlling mechanism it was impossible to Tell How the head impaled on a stick had been brought to life. Nearby hooked to an electronic Board that controlled some of its facial movements was the Green head of Leonardo another of the teenage mutant ninja turtles. In Britain the Quot ninja Quot in the turtles Moniker has been replaced a display Board near the Glass Case holding five of the muppet show characters reveals that miss Piggy like1 other aging stars has had a nose Job since she was first created. Actually the teenage mutant ninja turtles Are among the Many legacies of Jim Henson on View at the museum one of the exhibits features the Quot sesame Street Quot characters. The popular puppets Are reproduced constantly with the Challenge being to exactly duplicate the predecessors. Smaller versions of the muppet characters Are seen in another Glass Case holding the muppet babies which were designed to spark children s imaginations. The babies often leave the Nursery in their cartoon show by using their imaginations. Other Glass cases hold some of the sesame Street gang and some of the fragile Rock characters. Kids and adults will enjoy the touch Wall. Visitors can touch samples of the fur used for Oscar the Crouch and fozzie Bear. Among the hands on displays is a Quot character wheel Quot similar to the one used for creating new characters for some of Henson s children s shows. By spinning three moveable wheels you can create your own funny face puppet by Matching up different noses eyes and hairpieces to brightly coloured Blank faces on a stationary background. Video monitors abound in the exhibit. Visitors can see creatures being formed at the creature shop How the sesame Street and muppet shows Are made the making of some of Henson s movies and a compilation of sesame Street shows in different languages. The exhibit which opened sept. 25, will run until the museum of the moving image allow 2 to 21/2 hours for a visit to the museum. It is almost necessary to go through the entire museum to see the special exhibit of Jim Henson s work because it is the last of the 52 exhibition areas. But As the museum includes exhibits about photography the Silver screen and television Many people will find the rest of the museum interesting As Well. Among the exhibits Are 19th-Century wooden cameras Charlie Chaplin s tramp suit Marilyn Monroe s Slinky Black dress from some like it hot and the Story boards from the wizard of of. The museum of the moving image is located under the Waterloo Bridge among other museums on London s South Bank. To reach the museum via the London underground get off at Waterloo station and follow the signs to the museum. It s about a five minute walk from the station.
