This week the Mathies face a real disaster one that has split up what this tightly knit mormon family cherishes most a the family itself. Finances and landlord problems Are forcing them to move from their Roomy off base House and they said Hahn a officials refuse to give them adequate housing. As a result Lavere and Janet Mathie have Farmed their children out to Church members and others in the Community. The oldest girls my Lissa 18, and Laray 17, were the first to leave. On sunday they went to live with a couple in nearby Sohren. Before the departure the family gathered in prayer. Mathie is a master sergeant with Hahn a 50th component repair so. On tuesday Larry 14, left. Matthew 16, is living with his summer Job supervisor. Nathaniel 14, also is saying goodbye. After thursday night there will be no children in the Mathie household. In 10 Days the parents will move in with German neighbors sleeping on the floor. The base housing office offered them one four bedroom unit which they declined. The Mathies said the four bedroom is inadequate and a violation of air Force regulations. The Mathies said they need two apartments. A combination of one two bedroom and one three bed a room would be acceptable. But those normally have a Long waiting list. They also said they know of other Large families in Germany and Japan who occupy two units. R base commander col. Kenneth Neher has urged them to reconsider. She said the unit she was shown had no toilet facilities in the basement. She said she and her husband have met with Neher several times in an attempt to resolve the problem. He says we might have too much space when compared to senior officers quarters a she said. Housing officials however have told them repeatedly that there is no distinction Between enlisted and officer quarters. The family has been working with housing since August and their need for new living quarters is now urgent she said. Instead of trying to solve the problem they re coming up with ways Why they can to solve the problem a Mathie said. A Hahn Public affairs spokesman said base officials were on a training exercise and unable to respond to questions about the Mathies situation. Mrs. Mathie said their present landlord who lives m Berlin at first attempted to evict them claiming they had damaged the premises. The Mathies however had noted All damage to the housing office before moving in last december she said. They later discovered the landlord was trying to sell the House but the Deal fell through. Now with Winter approaching the House has a malfunctioning heating system. The family has had to heat water to Wash the 150 pieces of dishes and cookware they use daily. The family said they also Learned that the German agent who helped them get the House disappeared with their 2,000-Mark Deposit. When housing officials at Hahn helped track Down the Money the Mathies were informed that the landlord planned to keep the Deposit and hike their rent. They now pay 1,300 Marks monthly plus utilities. Mathie said his housing allowance will not cover the rent increase. Because of a devalued Dollar he said he is paying $300 a month out of his own pocket.
