     European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - November 6, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse                                Tuesday november 6, 1990 the stars and stripes a a a Page 7 police arrest 5 in halloween Case new York not a two teen agers and three adults were arrested sunday and charged in the halloween rampage against homeless men on wards Island in which nine people were injured and one was killed police said. Four of those arrested were charged with second degree murder and the fifth was charged with attempted murder police said. Several other suspects Are being sought in the attacks and police said As Many As 18 people took part. The arrests came almost four Days after police found the body of Carlos Melendez 35, a homeless Man in a Weed strewn lot on the Island. Police said Melendez a Throat was slashed with a meat Cleaver and he was left to bleed to death. He and nine other homeless men some of whom were beaten and then Cut with a meat Cleaver were attacked wednesday night by a group of Young men wielding knives bats and Lead pipes As Well As the Cleaver. Some of the youths wearing halloween masks taunted their victims with cries of a trick or  the brutality of the attacks reverberated through new York City which has already been shaken by a Stream of murders and assaults apparently committed solely for the thrill of it. The attacks also brought to Light a Battle Between two worlds beset by poverty and drugs one in the Public housing projects of East Harlem the other in the shelters and shantytowns of homeless men for whom drug related violence is often difficult to escape. The five were identified As Robert Sherman 23 Hector Torres 15 Aaron Ware 13 his brother Raymond fender 22 and Eric Williams 18. All were charged As adults. Williams who was not charged in the Melendez slaying was charged with attempted murder in an attack on another homeless Man. The five were arrested through tips from residents of the housing Complex records of similar assaults on homeless men in the area and the questioning of the suspects. The attack occurred about 10 . On wednesday night at the Bridge that connects wards Island to Manhattan. The guidelines suggest that depending on body size and activity level a healthy diet consists of three to five Servings daily of vegetables two to four Servings of fruit six to 11 Servings from the food group that includes breads cereals Rice and pasta two to three Servings of milk Yogurt and cheese and two to three Servings of meats poultry fish dry Beans and peas eggs and nuts. They also recommend that total fat provide 30 percent or less of daily calories and that saturated fat which is mainly from animal products and tropical oils be limited to less than 10 percent of total calories. The guidelines define moderation in drinking alcoholic beverages for women one drink a Day and for men no More than two drinks a Day. One Dunk Means 12 ounces of regular Beer five ounces of wine or 1.5 ounces of 80-proof distilled spirits. The guidelines make special recommendations for pregnant women saying they May need additional nutrients and should not drink alcoholic beverages. John r. Cady president of the National food processors association said the new guidelines recognize that there Are no bad foods but rather bad diets. Cady said his group would use the guidelines As a basis for a National Rood Label education program to help Consumers when new food labels Are introduced. Cady a group which represents the makers of most of the nations processed and packaged food products is leading that Effort. But the Center for science in the Public interest a nonprofit consumer advocacy group contended that the new guidelines Are weaker than the 1985 ones. Also they do not heed the advice of the National Academy of sciences and the surgeon general the Center said.
