European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - December 14, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 10 a writers decry protesters Back Gulf p 1 continue to be amazed at the Nav chess and Igno Ranee of a very Small but loud minority of americans they Haven to remembered the Price we and the world paid when we attempted to sit behind our Ocean barriers and Quot mind our own business earlier this Century. The cataclysmic eruptions created by nation gobbling dictators May have been stopped Early if the world had taken the very same Steps we Are attempting now. Woe the Price we paid for timid ass and hesitation when the world desperately needed direction and leadership. And now that we have the leadership and collective cooperation that May prevent world War Iii this Quot peace movement proclaims they know More of better than our leadership. Do they have Access to information the intelligence gathering agencies provide do they even consider the consequences of idly standing by. Maybe we will not prevent War. Maybe we will not Stop the Saddam of the world from conquering another nation by Force. Arc we supposed to negotiate with a madman who holds foreign citizens hostage Don t have All the answers. But in a sure the policy makers of our country and of the United nations Are in a much better position to make educated judgments than Street politicians who rely on tainted Media reports. History teaches us that brute Force responds to few things. Right Solidarity and resoluteness of purpose seem to be the common values that succeed against the More powerful wrong. The French proved it the poles repeatedly proved it throughout history even recently and we even proved Quot it in the 18th Century. For that matter All of Eastern Europe can thank its newfound Freedom to the perseverance of the West. I do not wish the a a peace activists to Stop in their quest for a peaceful solution. It is their constitutional right to protest and make their views known just As it is , 1 do wish they would take the time to learn the facts before they initiate a program that could end up with politicians doing w hat will get them re elected versus what is right. The Power they and All of us hold is in the ballot. Like it or not we have become the modern worlds policeman in All eras there have been such global watchdogs with the decline of the communist world we must pick up the Mantle and Lead the free nations in support of the Only True world court of Justice. This is another test of the United nations resolve to make Pur world a Safe place even for the weak and isolated Narti on. They do it for Kuwait in 1961, but maybe with the newfound global cooperation we will finally reach an evolution in International politics this May Well be the first True test of our resolve to maintain peace Progress and International Justice. Quot a capt William m. Rierson a Bamberg German seems to me that with All the protesters against . Involvement in the persian Gulf exercising their right of free speech its Only natural that i exercise mine As Well. According to Jerry Gordon a protest organizer our involvement is Only a for big Oil and profits. Let the people of hat Region determine Tih Cir own destiny a says Jerry great idea Jer. Hut you should also realize that if Saddam Hussein has his wave the people of that. A a opponents of . Military involvement in the persian Gulf demonstrated at a rally last week in new York City Region wont exactly be the ones to decide. Instead the person calling the shots no Pun intended will be none other than Saddam himself y. Consider this suppose Saddam decides that the destiny of Quot that Region is to Cut off the Oil Supply to the West. I Hope you have enough subway tokens m hand. Not to mention sweaters and blankets for the Winter when your heating Bill goes through the Roo no one knows for sure How this going to turn out. Those of us faced with the possibility of deploying to the Middle East Are comfortable with the idea that most of America is supporting us. A staff sgt. Steven c. Hamer Berlin a a a by in response to your recent article concerning the pro r the states i would like to begin by saying that As a . Forces member i wholly approve of our involvement in the Middle East. I think Rabbit is appalling that there Are people in the United states who take for granted living m a free society protected by the armed forces that they seem to feel will be forgotten As the soldiers were in the Early 1970s. Y. These protesters should Stop wasting their Energy protesting and put their efforts towards something More useful such As sending care packages and letters to the soldiers who Are far from their Homeland and families i would like to give my support to those soldiers who Are deployed in saudi Arabia and let them know that there Are a majority of us who do support their Mission and Back them 100 percent. A pfc Mark f. Panczer Bamberg Germany a. If they Are so sure that we should pull our people out maybe they should read a history Book or two paying special attention to the. Period prior to Wii. If the leaders then had acted in Unity As they Are now then maybe the horrible things that happened might have been prevented. A spec. Ernest j. Chamberlain Wurzburg Germany Reading Ith growing concern in v the stars which some Seyle people in the Gulf have been complaining of Low morale boredom a and have been questioning our presence in the Gulf it sell. A a a y a. A i can to say that i know where those people Are coming from 1 am not there in the desert although Lam sure i May end up there. 1 also know that the vast majority of you go about you duties with amt complaint and 1 do just to wish to generalize the comments of a few onto the Many but i feel compel de to give some comment to these complaints if Only from any personal beliefs and attitude towards the Eliv i have no doubt that morale gets Low there sometimes it is inevitable Given the situation. But Low morale does not have to equate to Hud morale. Bad morale eos re still. In w ords or actions that May give Aid and Comfort to the enemy. No one likes to sit and Wail on an Uncertain fixture and this can have an effect on morale. Consider this though if the situation Sli Ould come to War at least we a and our allies a will be on the ground ready to Stop armed aggression. We wont have to fight our Way onto the beaches of saudi Arabia. In a sure the thousands of soldiers who were killed and wounded while fighting their Way ashore at Normandy would t have minded at till if they could have already been in France when the shooting started. In a sure they probably would rather have been bored to tears on duty in the sudetenland the Ruhr Valley and in Poland in the late 1930s rather than watch helplessly As Hitler gobbled up parts of Europe and precipitated a world War. Yes its True that the end May be a while in coming but if you read the news reports closely you can see that cracks Are beginning to appear in iraqis initial stance. Ask yourselves if you Ami the troops of our allies were not there in the desert would any cracks be visible it took 40 years of constant vigilance and readiness in Europe and around the world for the cold War to end a and the end was Victory personally 1 would rather we were there for As Long As we Are needed and come Back victorious than give in to Iraq by Way of a mediocre albeit Quick solution and return Home waiving a piece of paper while chirping a peace in our it did no to work for Europe in 1938, and it w on to work now. All in the armed services indeed All americans and probably the vast majority of the human race support you Are concerned for you and Pray daily for a successful and peaceful end to the crisis. We All know it s hard to leave family loved ones and friends behind for so Long with no knowledge of when we will return it has always been so for those of us whose Job it is to stand Quot in harms but we must remain realistic. When the soldiers of both sides marched off to War in the summer of 1914 they promised those they left behind that they would be a Home before the leaves fall a but world War i was destined to drag on for four Long bloody years. Lets not delude ourselves by promising a Home by Christmas or other such hopeful yet unrealistic platitudes. Rather we should Promise to be a Home when tyranny is v a a a a a a. /. I have no doubt that Many kuwaitis Are becoming impatient and their morale sagging As they watch their country stripped of everything valuable As food grows scarce As Active resistance is crushed and random executions and torture become a part of daily life. But like their Kindred spirits in the countries under nazi occupation during Wail i am sure that they continue to hold out Hope that they will be rescued. As another w Riter on the subject mentioned no doubt whisper to each other and to their children to be patient and take heart a the americans Are nearby Aid they will not forsake us. A maj Peter a.
