European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 23, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 24 b the stars and stripes saturday March 23,1991outdoor adventure for a master in the Bass a the Bass Bass anglers sportsman society masters classic world championship of Bass Angling will be held aug. 22-24 in Baltimore. Competition Waters will include the upper Chesapeake Bay and 12 Rivers that flow into the Bay North of the . 301 a Bridge. .0 a a a a. A a / a daily weigh ins will be held in the 11,800-scat Baltimore Arena. The Bass masters classic outdoor show in the Baltimore convention Center just Steps from the Arena will offer the latest in fishing tackle and equipment. The weigh ins and outdoor show will be free to the Public. / those making plans to attend the classic should note the dates Are one week later than announced last year. The change was made to assure simultaneous booking of the championship and the classic outdoor show. \ tentative plans Call for 40 identical Competition boats to be launched from Gunpowder Falls state Park ramp in Dundee Creek a tributary of Gunpowder River just North of Baltimore. The daily ceremonial launching will take about 45 minutes. The anglers will be allowed to fish the Bay or any of the 12 Rivers within the limits of the classic Waters. The daily limit will be five Bass each measuring at least 12 inches. Black Bass Are most often found in the Rivers but can also be found in the fresher w Ater of the upper reaches of the Bay. Rivers on the Western Shore include the Marothy just North of the Jol Bridge the Patapsco that hosts Baltimore and the Back just North of the City. Beyond there the Middle Gunpowder Bush and Susquehanna fall into line up the Shore to the North. The Northeast Elk and Bohemia Rivers Are located at the northeastern end of the Bay. The Sassafras River empties into the Chesapeake on the easter Mark Swearengen Side about two thirds of the Way up the Bay from the 301 Bridge. The Chester River flows into the Bay from the Eastern Shore near the Bridge. A common problem of tournament fishing is often Lack of Elbow room for anglers but it be a problem in this years classic. Not Only Are there 12 Rivers but also each River has a plethora of creeks coves inlets and holes. The largest of the Rivers is the Susquehanna but anglers May not fish beyond the Shoals 10 Miles North of the River Mouth. Fishing should be excellent. Most of the Rivers inside the classic boundaries Are plentiful with Bass. A this fishery had really declined but in recent years through management techniques we be brought it Back a said Leon Fewlass a regional manager for the Maryland department of natural resources Freshwater fisheries division he added that there has been Little fishing pressure on the area because most tournaments in that part of the country Are held on the Potomac River. Another Factor according to Fewlass is that grass is coming Back in the area. Previously the Bass were caught Only around old pilings and other Man made structures. Now they Are often found in the new growths of Milf Oil celery grass and Hydric la. There a More commercial and residential development on these Waters than most previous classic locations and there Are Many docks piers and old pilings up and Down the Shoreline. Contenders for the world championship title will be the 35 top ranked pros from the $2.7 million Bas master tournament Trail joining the classic pros will be the five 1991 wrangler anglers a the top five amateurs from the 2,500 Bass clubs who win their slots Are the wrangler Bass National championship on Smith Mountain Lake in Roanoke va., april 18-20. Rick Clunn defending 1990 Champion from Montgomery Texas has an automatic invitation to the classic so the number of contenders could be 41. But it appears that Clunn will qualify As one of the 35 pros As he has done each of the past 17 years. A. Quot -,.-v a a a a a a a Quot a.
