A it a a a <v-.v. 7ihe monastery in Etta near Garmisch Germany to dates Back to 1330 a but i0 you can see a lot in Justa Day Yavanian impressions by Chuck Roberts staff writer one of the Nice things about the armed forces recreation Center in Garmisch Germany is that there is plenty to see in the surrounding area. Many of the highlights can be covered in a single Day trip. The trip includes the monastery in Ettal the Castle in Linderhof picturesque Oberammergau with it shops full of wooden Knickknacks churches in wies and Steingarden and the Granddaddy of All castles a Neuse Hanstein. The journey begins with Ettal a monastery about nine Miles outside Garmisch. To get there take National Road 2 in the direction of Munich and Oberammergau. After passing through the towns of fart Bant and Oberhau take a loft on National Road 23. A a a a a a a a a a a a a a a a. A a. You can t miss the monastery with its massive Green dome coming into View on your right As you enter the City. It and surrounding buildings Are part of an Independent Benedictine Community dating Back to 1330.standing inside the monastery on a cold Day in february tourists Clad in Cross country ski garb strained their necks upward at a ceiling some 200 feet above. Their breath became shrouds of foggy Mist in the cold Church. A a 1 the visitors were looking at 431 figures painted on the ceiling by austrian Painter .  Fresco took  and his helpers four Summers to Complete. In the surrounding buildings monks continue to operate a boys school and brew their famous master  Down the same Road on the left is the Linderhof Castle which is landscaped with 75,000 plants and a Fountain that shoots water 100 feet into the air. Linderhof was the favorite Castle of King Ludwig ii of Bavaria known As Quot mad King Ludwig Quot who squandered much of the state s Money on Castle Quot construction. At Linderhof he created a fantastic dream world with devices such As a trapdoor dining table set by servants in the Kitchen and then raised a with ropes into his chamber. On the grounds a probably the most charming part of the Castle a there is a Grotto a Cavern with a Lake. A a a.  �,.�  after the Castle continue on National Road 23 for three Miles until you reach Oberammergau. We thought Oberammergau was overrated but you la probably want to make a Short Stop there because you be heard so much about the town where the passion play is performed every-10 years. There Are More wooden statues in the store windows than you can shake a stick at but the town is bavarian quaint and pleasant. If you re ready for More touring continue on National Road 23. Make a left turn toward. Wies. Fussed and Steingarden. Continue on a bumpy. Winding Scenic drive unto another left turn leads you to the Village of wies. The Church in wies has arguably the most beautifully painted ceiling in Germany. The Brilliant Blue colors offer a striking contrast to the Snow White Walls. A a a a a t a ,. A the Church was built in i 746 to accommodate the flood of europeans who made pilgrimages to witness a sculpture of Christ in chains which is said to  tears. A. The next Stop is the Church and monastery in Steingarden. Exit the main Road when you see the or Smitte Village Center sign. Then take another left \ when you see a.
