If i were to try and identify the units individually i might miss one and not give credit where credit is due. As the soldiers of the coalition forces were deployed to their Uncertain destination each Soldier was about to take on an entirely different Mission than any we had Ever trained for. Instead of being fearless in combat and applying professionalism to the technology of out modern advanced armies we Are carrying out a much More important task of providing the necessities of life to people upon whom Saddam Hussein launched a Battle of vengeance. Rather than using smart bombs we Are using smart people to provide care and shelter food and Medicine order and Hope to the kurdish people. So Many of the soldiers who participated in operation desert shield storm Are still writing letters of disappointment for Many feel that they should receive much More than they have. For those involved in operation provide Comfort shield storm there will be no parades no crowds of people waving old glory and no yellow ribbons. A a but there will be a sense of self satisfaction a knowing that you have provided help and shown the kurdish people that there is still Hope. There Are people who can and will come to the Aid of others. Should the soldiers of operation provide Comfort begin to feel As though they Are not appreciated remember the people who do appreciate what you Nave done. Remember How you have made an Impact on the lives of those who hold the coalition forces in such a High regard for the help that you provided. What you accomplished was turning a ghost town into a thriving and productive Community. Where the streets were once empty and Bare Are people who have come Down from the wilderness. You Are truly heroes in a different sense a spec. Richard e. Wise operation provide comfor Israel a no vacation i am fed up with service members and their family members saying that the soldiers who deployed to Israel for operation desert storm were on vacation and did not do anything. In the three months since our return to Germany i know of at least four soldiers who have been told by senior cos and officers that they do not deserve their combat Patch. My wife is asked by other family members if i enjoyed my a a vacation while in Israel. Well if they Call the almost nightly scud attacks and the fear of losing your life a vacation not to mention wearing a protective mask for hours at a time sleeping in an old up medium tent for three months and walking around with 30 extra pounds of gear on then they have watched too Many rambo movies. Then there Are the people who say that the soldiers in saudi Arabia had to Deal with scuds and the threat of ground attack so they were in More danger. Well my units location was about 14 Miles from the West Bank. If you paid attention in history class then you know what that Means. Lets not forget or. Saddam who said Many times that he was going to Burn Israel to the ground. I will admit to the Way the israeli people treated us a they treated us great. Yes they gave us free gifts and yes we were allowed on a few Tours of the holy land. But i ask that the next time you see one of our proud soldiers and you done to think that he she deserves their combat Patch and you want to state your opinion on this to someone then i am sure that my battalion commander or command sergeant major will be interested in hearing your Side of Yoter Story. If you still think that the soldiers who served in Israel were on vacation then the next time you plan your family vacation done to plan it in arc or Back in the states. Make plans for Beirut or Yugoslavia and enjoy. A sgt. Kristoffer Souma Giessen Germany editor s note letters from readers expressing their viewpoints or opinions Are published daily in this space. That most of them really weren to conscientious objectors goes without saying. But to Call a True conscientious objector a Coward is ludicrous. We Tell our children to stand up for their principles at whatever the Cost. We Tell them to say no to drugs regardless of the peer pressure. And Here we have people ridiculing people for standing up for their principles. To declare ones self a conscientious objector a True conscientious objector is not the act of a Coward. It is a courageous act especially when everyone Calls you a Coward. The peer pressure can be great but they stand on their principles. As far As what to do with them it does no to really Surprise me that these writers should act As though helping people is a punishment. A real conscientious objector is generally More in tune with duty to his fellow Man than the most decorated Soldier. A Patrick Ludwa Mannheim German missing buying Power in a curious As to Why no one seems to have addressed the Impact of the absence of a half million service members plus the thousands of Dod civilians and contractors a namely Consumers a from the United states Economy. Granted most of us done to Swap stocks or buy out companies or any other of the High finance Maneu vers. But we re a Heck of a lot of Consumers. If anyone does no to realize this they Only have to look at All the towns near military bases that suffered when we deployed. Some reasons i think this is significant include that families left behind often chose not to invest in High Cost items such As cars or Homes until and if the service member or civilian to the editor Many service members put themselves on very restricted budgets to ensure their family had sufficient funds or so they could save for future use. Prior to and during the War most service members were too Busy performing their Mission and preparing for the potential threat to even have time to spend Money. There Are certainly several other reasons. While some May not consider us to be a significant consumer group i feel that our absence had a big Impact on the National Economy. A chief warrant officer 2 Karon l. Campbell operation desert stormdon9t disarm the honest a recent writer first stated that he was against Banning guns but in the same paragraph he said he would ban All guns that have no sporting value. How do you differentiate Between sporting and non sporting. He then stated that you done to need a constitutional amendment to Bah guns because a the founders did no to intend that psychotics own Well the founders did no to intend that slander and libel should be Legal. But they wrote the first amendment. They did no to intend that murderers should go free on some minor technicality Over the collection of evidence. But they wrote the fourth amendment. Does the writer suggest that we nullify the entire Constitution because it is not perfect. There is a desire among Many to look for easy solutions to Tough problems. Unfortunately simple remedies rarely solve Complex dilemmas. Crime is not caused by inanimate objects. It is the result of Anomie economic disarray nihilism and judicial malfeasance. Disarming the honest will Only exacerbate the problem by emboldening the wicked. A Frank r. Sweet we Brucken Germany Faith is essential in response to a recent letter yes there Are numerous passages within the Bible that can be argued. But we can attribute these slight inconsistencies to the human imperfections of the prophets and their inability to perfectly Transfer divine revelation into written form. This is compounded by Many a fallible nature in trying to understand it All. This is where prayer is important in trying to understand the scriptures. If our re not a Christian this concept is Ard to fathom the world can argue this and any More Points but we must remember that christianity is based on Faith. If god had made things Clear to everyone there would be no need for Faith which is a major theme of the Bible. Hebrews 11 1 sums it up Best a now Faith is the substance of things hoped for the evidence of things not if the Bible had prophesied that a slightly Chubby Rock no Roll Singer from Memphis Tenn would appear living 14 years after his death then i would believe the Elvis sightings.
