Maine gov. John Mckernan Early monday signed a temporary spending measure that allowed 10,000 state employees to resume working. Some 20,000 Laid off employees were told to report to work in Connecticut after a six Day shutdown of non essential state services. Connecticut gov. Lowell p. Weicker or. Issued an executive order sunday ordering the employees Back to work monday under a Resolution passed by the general Assembly. Weicker said he would allow the measure to become Law without his signature. It authorizes the continuation of state government through july 14, even if no budget is approved. Weicker shut Down most state services on tuesday because the general Assembly had failed to pass a budget containing a proposal to impose a state income tax on Connecticut workers for the first time. Weicker said he opposed the continuing Resolution because the state is a out of he noted that the temporary budget will Cost the state another $100,000 a Day in additional interest charges. The legislature on saturday passed a temporary spending measure to give lawmakers and the governor time to work out details of a labor Bill that held up Maine a $3.2 billion budget. There remains a possibility the state will close again if Mckernan and legislators fail to agree on a workers compensation Bill by wednesday.
