One Point not addressed is the differing standards for hair lengths for men and women. At the least these rules Are demoralizing to the males who prefer a longer hairstyle. At the worst it is a Security Giveaway. How difficult is it to spot a . Soldier amount our allies French British Canadian and German soldiers Are not forced to have identical Short hairstyles. In the Gulf War women proved they could perform the Mission. They proved it so Well in fact that a More Active combat role is being considered. The length of their hair in no Way detracted or deterred them from their duties. So Why not also revise the old rules to accommodate male soldiers in this matter a sgt. 1st class Charles silence Heilbronn German help for poor minorities. More often than not gun control is championed by Liberal politicians. Why Liberal politicians Are the usual spokesmen for minorities and the poor. The More essential a politician is to his or her constituents the greater Power the politician has. The fewer weapons that minorities and poor people have to protect themselves against violent criminals racists and the like the More that their political leaders must be consulted. Most Liberal politicians respond with Token efforts instead of a push for stiffer penalties to deter crime and violence. Being too efficient would reduce the problems and threaten their political Job Security by making these Liberal politicians less essential i am an armed Black american who is extremely angry about the profit that people seem to make from the misery of the minority and poor communities. I Challenge the Legal system to give me and others some effective guidance to allow citizens to take action without always having one hand tied behind our backs. Sometimes the police make it in time. In minority and poor communities they usually wont. A sgt. 1st class Harry m. Braxtonjr. Augsburg German prevent another War Secretary of state James a. Baker Illus comments about the origins of the world wars that a a we be had two hot wars and one cold War in this Century All of which. Started in Eastern Europe a May be incomplete As any condensation of such Complex affairs must be but it does not a deviate from the truth As was noted in a recent letter. Wei began with a crisis Inathe Balkans. Austria Hungary Prussia Russia France Britain Italy and Turkey All had interests there and it was the web of their treaty obligations that caught them up in a global conflict. The tragedy was awesome but the War we think about in the trenches of Western Europe was Only part of the picture. Battles were fought in the East from Turkey to Russia resulting in the breakup of the Central Powers the fall of the Czar and the bolshevik revolution. In his Rise to Power Adolf Hitler decreed that Germany would build a new Empire in the East exterminating the slavs and stealing their and. He started by invading Austria and Czechoslovakia. Ww1i began with the German soviet attack on Poland. It was for the Freedom of the poles and to prevent further German adventurism that France and Britain went to War. The soviet Union later became one of the major partners in the War against Germany hut ing control of the countries they thus the War ended with the partition of Europe and the beginning of the cold War. Now As the cold War ends and we watch the last great Empire collapse new opportunities arise in Eastern Europe for Freedom for peace for nationalism for Prosperity or for War. This is what Baker was getting at the Security of Eastern Europe remains crucially important to America because the Region bred the two most horrible wars the world has known. We must not allow a third to begin there As Well. A capt. Eric a. Boysen Stuttgart German editor s note letters from readers expressing their viewpoints or opinions Are published daily in this space. Many do not know How to conduct themselves. It is our responsibility to teach and guide them. If you have nothing to do but pick out other Peoples faults and to complain about them you Are no better. It is Little wonder that your German Friend was so astounded. As senior cos we Are the teachers. If we let the Type of behaviour you have witnessed go uncorrected then we Are failing these Young people. Those Young people did no to justify or Seal your attitude you did. People make mistakes. Accept or Correct a a done to a 1st sgt. Douglas Boggs Bamberg German putting his 2 cents in i am writing to the person who is so upset Over losing his 2 cents. Did it Ever occur to the writer that when an item is marked at 2 cents Over the Nickel he will be charged Only the Nickel thus making 2 cents wow what a Deal. In fact if the writer shops around and Only buys items at 2 cents Over the Nickel he will make All that Money he is complaining about losing. I suspect if the writer kept very careful tabs on How much he loses is. How much he makes he will find it comes out about even. Another thing the writer did not letters to the editor think about the costs involved in getting those All important pennies Here. It costs the government millions per year shipping coins overseas that most people would rather not be bothered with. Since our tax dollars pay for that shipping the writer loses anyway. As for raising the Price so you done to expect any change Back it would seem that they have accomplished that already by rounding to the nearest Nickel. I would like to thank the writer however. I have finally found a letter complaining about something so trivial that it demanded a response. A tech. Sgt. Paul f. Little Pitburg a Germany done to ignore Slovenia Slovenia is a nation that has scrupulously followed the rules in its path toward a democratic government. This has included two years of discussions on the Federal yugoslav level in an attempt to negotiate a looser confederation of states and a statement of intent six months prior to its actual declaration of Independence. The communist government has responded to this statement of Independence by aggressively attacking Slovenia in an offensive that includes the routine bombing of civilians. The United states assumes the role of Spectator. I think we re taking this in the wrong spirit when we sit Back to see what Europe will do. The american attitude reminds me of a trial period at a Day care Center a a see if the kid can take care of his Are we now a nation that Only supports democracy in areas of the world where we have something to gain lets go to the Aid of this nation in its legitimate struggle for a democratic government. A Susan Catherine Berli Parade Money misspent a Only in every time i hear those words i have to laugh. We americans spent about $40 million on two parades one in new York and the other in Washington to Praise our forces for the great Job done in desert storm. You see i did no to read anywhere or see on to anywhere that our coalition forces who were All so crucial to our Success in the persian Gulf had had such elaborate celebrations. The British did have a Parade but it lasted a a Only 45 minutes. When asked Why it was so Short it was said and i quote there a nothing glorified in death be it foreign or Domestic. Now done to get me wrong. We appreciate the Praise that we get but i am a professional Soldier. We could have been patted on the Back in another Way e.g., we could have taken that $40 million and started a operation provide help in our own country. Just imagine no More hungry people in America and medical care for All not just for the Well to do. You see the War lasted a few hours but the War to help the homeless and the helpless has been going on for years in our own Back Yard. So lets turn those planes around that Are Landing in Turkey and the Gulf and land them in the Bronx of new York the slums of . And any state that needs it. Done to Pat us on the Back for doing our Job. We will celebrate when America comes on line with All the other countries that take care of All of their own first. Boy what a Celebration that would be.
