Since Early May these soldiers have been policing the desert fixing secondary loads painting Usa eur bound Sand painted vehicles staging vehicles and loading lashing and tying Down vehicles on ships. The troops have done this in tremendous heat and oppressive humidity. These soldiers Are not replacements sent Down to help units redeploy but Are the same ones who deployed Down Here in december. Many of these soldiers Are volunteers Many were they Are the soldiers of the Vii corps redeployment come. They come from both usar eur and the United states. They Are reservists National guardsmen and Active duty soldiers. Their numbers Are Small but their performance has been big. To enable the great majority of corps soldiers to redeploy in april and May these port support teams were established As very austere organizations. Because the posts Are Small it has been necessary to require All soldiers to remain until All the equipment from each is shipped. There Are some opportunities for r amp r Here in saudi Arabia. However there Are still no such things As weekends Here. Workday shifts Are routinely about 14 hours including transportation to and from the port. Despite this we be had amazingly few complaints. These soldiers understand their Mission. Together with the hardworking soldiers of the 7th trans group who also had to Load out the xviii an corps they have executed that Mission flawlessly. I urge the respective chains of command to remember the a a admin time Long Holiday weekends and Liberal leave policies when these soldiers return to your command. They have done a magnificent Job for you and deserve to be taken care of. A it. Col. Bob Soldel operation desert storm clean up language on july fourth we were travelling with my parents who were visiting and stopped at the Canadian base near Baden Baden. While my husband went inside the Bike shop we were subjected to a Long loud obscene tirade from three or four Young men parked beside us. In be no idea what their problem was but As an English teacher i feel obliged to Point out that a tire an inanimate object is incapable of doing to itself the things they were suggesting. From my 10-year-old daughter to my 80-year-old parents we were not impressed. In be always told my children that people talk like that because they Are too ignorant to know the Correct things to say i had mixed emotions when this car finally drove away and i could see they were americans. I was disgusted by their behaviour but relieved they were not canadians since i had never before observed such a thing from our Good neighbors to the North. I suppose Canada has its jerks but neither of them seems to be overseas and we do visit their bases several times a year. In a sure some people will say i was remiss not to confront the objectionable Young men about their language. Well in be done that in the past and have been even More rudely accosted so i no longer put myself in that position. Perhaps 1 should have taken the License number and then written a complaint but to whom and where would such a thing be addressed in a not a prude nor am i Apt to faint at cuss words. Its a poor speech habit and one All too easy to acquire As most of us know. In today a competitive world you Are judged the instant you open your Mouth. If All that comes Forth is garbage inappropriate language or poor grammar you will be out of the running at once. I Tell my students to imagine such language in use when Job interviewing meeting ones future inlays or talking to a receptionist on the Telephone. Rather than pointing fingers at each other and worrying about who is ugliest among americans perhaps we should All try to heed the warning a physician heal a Lana Mcwilliams Pitburg a German editor s note i letters from readers expressing their viewpoints or opinions Are published daily in this space. We love to pet dogs we see that look a a pretty but that we done to know. Well thanks to these Friendly people in a staying in Germany because they thought they could pet my dog without anything happening to them. They were wrong. My dog is very Loving but also very protective. I feel for the person but if you done to know a dog done to walk up to it. Dogs sense fear and will protect those they feel Are in danger. I have never walked up to a person walking their dog and tried to pet it. This is where common sense comes in. If you done to know the dog done to touch it. Remember dogs have Teeth and they do direct those at strangers. For those who love to pet dogs please done to pet mine. Buy your own to pet. If not for people like you my family and i would be in the states. A sgt. 1st class theonis a Brown Schwabish Amund Germany a smokers Are deadly i am an sex smoker. I quit three years ago. I have Learned a great Deal and had the Opportunity to see both sides. I had often wondered what the non smoker complained about. Now i know All too Well. When i quit i also developed an allergy to tobacco smoke. With All due respect to the recent writers who smoke letters to the editor the smoker mindlessly forces his or her smoke on others. Smokers done to go outside and smoke1 they smoke in common areas and latrines. They smoke in formation without considering the non smoker and done to wait for the command rest research has proved that passive smoke causes heart disease and kills about 50,000 people each year. It does no to take a Genius to figure out that smokers Are the third leading cause of death to themselves and others. A sgt. Jerry w. Smith Karlsruhe German standing up for cafes i am writing in response to the letter about Cash Only lines in cafes. Having a Mother who is a manager of an cafes Exchange i know How hard it is to please the customers. There is always somebody who has to complain about the system. If you can to wait in line to pay for your purchases then Why even go to the Exchange waiting in lines is a fact of life overseas. Do you know How much of a hassle it would be to open a a Cash Only line cafes has enough problems already without having to worry if the a Cash Only line has enough customers. Most people who make purchases use checks credit cards or App. A Kara Shatto bad Tolz German show some respect i would like to comment on the unprofessional ism that Many non commissioned officers seem to possess. When talking to lower enlisted soldiers specialist and below like me it is not necessary to raise ones voice and treat us As if we were inanimate objects incapable of comprehending anything intelligent. Also we Are not a a hey or but we Are private or specialist along with our last name. Even using the last name would be suitable. There seems to be some obvious confusion about the term respect. Respect1 is the willingness the key word to give consideration and appreciation. From my perception respect should be equal. In order to receive it a person must also give it. It does not say anywhere in the regulations that the lower ranking Soldier does not deserve it or should go without it. I often hear the poor cos commenting about a Soldier s motivation. Maybe he she would be motivated if he she were shown a Little respect a an essential part of maintaining High self esteem dignity and Pride in oneself. Last but not least will it kill an no to exercise a Little common sense when making a decision that could be detrimental to the welfare of the Soldier for instance if a Soldier has explained to an no that he she has some pertinent business to tend to it be in the Best interest of that Soldier to be put on a detail that would take the Soldier away from his her own Mission just to satisfy the person in charge of the detail. It would make More sense to pick someone without commitments. A spec. Camille m. Martin Nurnberg Germany pen pals i am a 35-year-old divorced Mother of two boys. I would very much like a pen pal.
