The Champion Brazil s Ayrton Senna and the challenger Nigel Mansell of Britain were ready to fight it out Over the 4.2-mile High Speed circuit. Senna had started the 16-race season with a 1 -2-3-4 punch in his Mclaren Honda to Knock the Competition off its feet. Victories in the United slates Brazil san Marino and Monaco had sent his rivals reeling and the question was could Senna win every race but by the fifth round the Competition showed it was up to the fight. Mansell captured the Lead at the Start of the Canad Angrand prix and after Senna had dropped out it Tennis Star Steffi Graf right joins the spectators. Her brother a race car Driver competed in an earlier race. Appeared he would coast to his first Victory of the season. But on the 69th and final Lap Mansell s Williams Renault rolled to a Stop with mechanical problems. Nelson Piquet took the Check ered Flag. Mexico was the sixth round and there Mansell s teammate Riccardo Patrese prevailed with Mansell second and Senna  rounds seven and eight it was Mansell s turn to deliver the 1-2 punch winning in France and his Home grand prix in Britain. So when the German grand prix rolled around on the last weekend in july the question now was could a Mansell break Senna s dominance at Bockenheim Senna had won the last three years and make it three  a Row in Friday s  l ripped around the circuit in 1 minute and 37.467 seconds setting a track record. The next Day he did even better a capturing the pole position with a time of 1 37.087, averaging 156.722 Mph. Senna was second fastest Only .187 seconds behind a sunday was warm and sunny and More than 100,000 race fans flocked to the Hocken Heiring to watch the action. Mansell took the Lead at the Start of the 45-Lap race followed by austrian Gerhard Berger Senna Patrese former world Champion Alain Prost and fellow Frenchman Jean Alesi. As the crowd and engines roared Mansell steadily increased his Lead Over the pack leading Berger by almost 10 seconds by Lap 12, and with the exception of a Brief Lead change when he pitted for new tires the Competition proved to be no Competition. Mansell captured the Check ered Flag 13.779 seconds ahead of Patrese. Senna running third ran out of fuel on the last Lap and ended up out of the Points. Senna still leads the run for the championship with 51 Points. But Mansell picking up 10 Points for his win is now Only eight Points behind. They re followed by Patrese with 28, Prost with 21, Berger with 19 and Piquet at 18. With seven rounds left the fight for the title is now up for  prix races remaining in Europe Budapest Hungary aug. 11 spa Belgium aug. 25. Monza Italy. Sept. A Estoril.
