Col. David w. Owen missed the boat in his letter titled a Fletcher Falls Short on leadership Owen doubts whether Arthur Fletcher chairman of the . Commission on civil rights a heard hundreds of whether he heard hundreds of complaints or just one complaint is not the Issue. The Issue is that Many minorities in Usa eur have demonstrated that they have More Faith in Fletcher a willingness to resolve what they perceive As discriminatory problems than they have in the Chain of commands willingness to resolve those same problems. This tired refrain the outside agitators has been used on numerous occasions in american history. Each time it has been answered with increased demands by americans minorities for most of them see it for what it truly is a a cop out. After insulting our intelligence with this Spiel the author then used threats in an attempt to Dampen this controversy. He tells us that these complaints a regressive tactics Are causing a serious erosion in White support for the goals of equal this incident is not about obtaining support. Its about resolving problems. As far As support is concerned i Haven t seen any african american standing on any european Street Corner asking for support. We Are talking about professional officers non commissioned officers military members and department of the army civilians a not drug abusers illiterates and murderers. Lets ensure that we separate these categories for too often when discussing african americans they Are lumped together. Most african americans want the same things that other people want a a Chance to raise their kids love their spouses serve one god and see Progress in their careers. They see the As a stage and everyone must be Given an Opportunity to Lay on it. If anyone is denied that Opportunity for reasons of color sex or re Ilion then that s discrimination and it must be eradicated from military society it. Col. James l. Walker Owci Brincken Germany a educate others on racism4 in response to the increasing amount of letters i see on racism in the stars and stripes it appears that they the writers have quite an impressive and extensive knowledge of Black history. Instead of fighting one another on who s right or wrong or what a letter might be suggesting Why not do the following As an alternative take your knowledge to your local Black heritage Council. Become Active in your local Community As Well As on base. Spread your word to the most important people of All a the children in school. After All we arc not born knowing How to hate being prejudiced or killing one another because of race color or religion. Why not try to unite your efforts with others if you done to like what you Are seeing and if you want changes wont work you say How for example was the Black Man Able to earn the right to vote or the indians the right to live As a free people practising their own religion. Etc.? because people stood together. Had the american indians stood together perhaps they not us would own America today. Had Africa stood up As one nation perhaps Africa would he free of White Rule today. Because both have failed to this Day to reconcile their differences they still suffer injustices. If you put aside your differences and help educate others on racism perhaps you will succeed United As one in ending this forever. A senior airman John e. This letter made sense to me. A few Days later there was an article about a Soldier who was the target of a customs investigation. According to the article this Soldier was questioned at length by the investigators during which time the Soldier requested to have a lawyer present. However the Soldier a dropped his request for a lawyer when one investigator threatened to have his wife picked up by the German police if he did no to drop his request. Further along in the article it stated that the military police did pick up the soldiers wife and their 3-year-old son. The Point is what Good Are your rights when Law enforcement activities apr cantly feel that they can ride roughshod Over them this article indicates that we live in a police state where your rights apply in theory but not in the real world quite contrary to All the propaganda put North on an radio and television. Hopefully this was an isolated incident. Unfortunately it happened to a Friend of mine some years ago in the Pacific theater. A staff sgt. Timothy e. Parker bad sibling Germany show sonic respect i d like to comment on Quot lets he 1 was thinking the same thing. I went to a to meeting last night at the elementary school. I was so embarrassed. There was a gym full of parents and children for open House. The principal told everyone to please quiet Down because it was very difficult for everyone to hear. So at first everyone mostly everyone quieted Down. Then when the teachers were being introduced people started talking. Little babies were running around children were talking a total chaos. When you could t hear anything the principal came Back and asked for quiet again. People continued to talk. 1 Here is a time and place to carry on conversation but not at meetings like this. Is there no respect from americans anymore other people around you might want to hear. Keep your Mouth closed teach your children to hush when needed or get a baby Sitter. Done to let babies run Hack and Forth. There is letters to the editor time and place for that too. These meetings done to last that Long that the children or the adult cannot sit quietly for 30 or 45 minutes. Paquin Iii Camp Monterey Kuwait a a loggers ruining Malaysia the Penan the indigenous people of the malaysian rain forests have less than a year to live if logging there continues at the present Pace. The rain forests of Sarawak Malaysia Are being destroyed at a rate of 2,500 acres daily by logging companies that have hired gangs to terrorize the Penan. Penan who have peacefully protested against the destruction of their homelands have been arrested by the police beaten and denied food and imprisoned in intolerable conditions. Seventy five percent of Penan children Are suffering from malnutrition As a direct result of logging which has reduced their Hunting and gathering areas. Malaysia is a country renowned for its unspoiled natural Beauty. If 24-hour logging is allowed to continue in Sarawak it will soon be a country that is infamous for systematically destroying that natural Beauty and contributing to the death of its own citizens in the process.
