Postal service has eliminated 37,000 jobs since 1989 and plans to Cut 47.000 More by the Middle of this decade postmaster general Anthony Frank said thursday. A in six years we Are reducing by 84,000 career employees. That obviously is a major major reduction a Frank said. The cuts in workers will reduce the postal service roster to 703,000 people from a a High water Mark of 787.000 in june 1989, Frank said. This is being done at the same time mail volume and the number of Homes served Are increasing he said. All the reductions so far have been done by attrition a and we Hope we can continue to do that. That s our plan a Frank said at a news meeting. Increased automation of mail sorting has made the cuts possible he added. The effect of this reduction will be an annual saving of $4.5 billion Frank said with savings already amounting to $1 billion per year. That will help hold postal rates Down he said. The Agency however is seeking an increase from the current 29-Ccnt rate to 30 cents a a difference that Means $850 million a year he said. Frank said he expects another increase in 1995, but his goal is for that to be the last one this decade. Frank added that he is continuing to push for improved service including 95 percent on time delivery and less time waiting in lines in Post offices. The american postal workers Union which has jurisdiction Over Many of the jobs eliminated so far has been sharply critical of Frank particularly challenging contracts with private firms to handle some work.
