King Cruger Mediterranean Bureau Adana Turkey a the Success of Allied forces working together during operation provide Comfort seems to spell an end to a nato formula for employing National forces and it appears Likely the formula May be replaced. The Long accepted formula called for individual National forces involved in coalition efforts to generally be assigned separate and Large tasks. A there during the operation to Aid kurdish refugees we saw just the opposite with coalition forces despite their different mind sets All pooling and pulling together a to accomplish common coalition tasks said air Force col. Paul e. Dembrowsky former director of operations for the combined task Force and currently its chief of staff. During provide Comfort the coalition abandoned the old concept and integrated forces Down to the company level to get things done Dembrowsky said in a recent interview at in Ciurlik a near Adana. A Petty National jealousies went away As commanders of National forces said a a a Here use these folks As you need them a a recalled the 44-year-old Dembrowsky. A coalitions using Small forces will be More and More the Way of the future As nations realize that Large standing armies no longer will be needed and that there will be requirements for a military presence in areas of the world a said Dembrowsky a resident of Stoughton mass. A this will provide the blueprint for future operations As envisioned by nato in its plans for a highly Mobile multinational Force backed by air resources Dembrowsky said. A i would Hope that As a result of what occurred Here that governments will realize How effective a multinational Force can be a Dembrowsky added. One of the keys to the Success of the operation to help the kurd has been the Quality of Small unit leadership in the Allied forces according to air Force maj. Gen. James l. Jamerson who relinquished command of the combined task Force thursday. Coalitions using Small forces will be More and More the Way of the future As nations realize that Large standing armies no longer will be needed and that there will be requirements for a military presence in areas of the world a air Force col Paul e. Dembrowsky a Good leadership at Low enough Levels Means that you can put troops out All Over the area and get things done and get decisions made a he said. The accomplishments of the military services in operation provide Comfort show that they have a tremendous capability to carry out S.C. a humanitarian Mission Jamerson said. A this is the first time we have seen what i would Call a mix of the Security operation along with a humanitarian operation. It was not just humanitarian. We had to provide Security to be sure we could execute the humanitarian part of that Mission a said Jamerson. A a that a something Only the military can do. A i done to know if i would have done anything differently a Jamerson said although admitting that the allies did have an enormous problem initially in trying to Supply water to kurd who had sought Refuge from iraqi forces in turkeys mountains. In april when the plight of the kurd was most desperate the allies mounted a massive Airdrop Effort out of in Ciurlik. Some air dropped supplies missed their intended targets and Many supplies were damaged upon Landing in the rugged terrain near the Iraq Border. A we done to have what i would Call excellent systems to get things from air planes to people on the ground. We can drop things by Parachute but most of the Airdrop system that we have created Over a period of time is designed for military purposes and As a result does no to entirely fit trying to drop delicate food sup Apelle a Marine helicopter Lowers a Load of supplies at the site of a raft Igic Camp near Zakhoo Iraq. Plies and things a Jamerson said. A your biggest problem was trying to find ways to get water in. You need to know first and Foremost what Are the most dramatic challenges you Are going to face and be Able to attack those quickly a he said. A it took us a while to understand that water was As big an Issue As anything else even in an area where you think there is water a Jamerson said. A a that a where we Learned from agencies that do this around the world All the time. They can Tell you that you better solve the water problem Early on. A knowing what you have to do Early on is very important and now we have a much better sense of that a Jamerson forces Europe plan 25% Cut aps amps by Joseph Owen Stuttgart Bureau Lahr Germany a the Canadian forces Europe will reduce the size of their contingent by one fourth next summer and fall the forces announced Over the weekend.
