Bureau air Force rescuers in Iceland will locate ships in trouble easier and reach them faster with their new helicopters according to officials at Nas Kef Lavik Iceland. The 56th air Rescue so at Nas Kef Lavik has already received the first of five factory new Hh-60g pave Hawk helicopters. The pave Hawks will replace the aging Hh-3e Jolly Green giant helicopters that have been used by the Squadron since november 1971. The old helicopters will be sent to a National guard unit in the states. A this is a much faster helicopter a said capt. Eric Snadecki a pave Hawk Pilot. A a we la be Able to get on scene a lot the new helicopter cruises Between 173 and 184 Mph compared to the 138 Mph maximum Tor the Hh-3. In addition the new Hh-60 has a Short duration a a burst Mode producing speeds reaching 207 Mph. It also has a More modern navigation system that allows pin Point accuracy incorporating systems for global positioning and inertial navigation plus doppler radar. The global positioning is a satellite navigation system allowing rescuers aboard a helicopter to pinpoint their aircraft Sloca Tion a within a number of feet of where you Are supposed to be a said it. Col. Jerry Cruit the squadrons director of operations. Cruit added that Many ships now use the system so they will be easier to locate when a Rescue is needed. The airborne rescuers can use the ships Gas global positioning satellite coordinates to lock in on their location. The other two systems a the inertial navigation and doppler a Back up the Gas. The ins basically a memory using input from the global system keeps a running tally of the aircraft a location based on airspeed Drift and other information. The doppler uses signals bounced off the surrounding terrain to calculate airspeed and Drift to track the aircraft a location when trying to reach a certain destination. The Hh-3 has none of these sophisticated devices. Aircrews had to rely on maps and a simple navigation system to determine their location. Other features on the Hh-60g include a color weather radar that helps aircrews pick their Way through and around bad weather. That radar can also locate ships on the water up to 60 Miles from the Helis amp map copter. If they can to avoid the weather aircrews can still do the Iob because of the pave Hawks increased agility and its anti icing systems. The Rotor Blades have a built in de icing system. For working at night the aircrews use night vision goggles when flying the Hh-3 and will continue to use them with the Hh-60. Some controversy surrounds the use of night goggles after some pilots in operation desert storm reported difficulty in distinguishing rising Sand dunes. A i flew in desert storm and it would be a lot More scary to Fly without night vision goggles than with them a Cruit said. A i did no to see any major problems with them the goggles while i was Over because of the new helicopter s introduction the number of personnel assigned to the Squadron will increase by approximately 50 members about double the units current size of 53. Many of the additional members will be assigned to the maintenance unit forming an avionics Section. Currently the Squadron relies on other units at Kef Lavik for work on the avionics system. In addition the Squadron will get an influx of new people to fill slots already in place Snadecki said. Many of the pilots and flight engineers who have no experience on the Hh-60g systems Are completing Tours at Kef Lavik As the Squadron prepares for the new helicopter. However As the Hh-3 pilots and flight engineers go to new assignments they will go through an Hh-60 training course at Kirtland fab . Flight engineers at Kelf Avik who have not completed their Tours before All the Hh-60s arrive will be trained locally. Since the Squadron was formed in 1971, the 56th has been credited with saving 250 lives.
