It was the first drop in eight months and raised renewed fears the Economy could stall or fall Back into recession. The Index of leading economic indicators had grown an average 0.8 percent a month from february through july forecasting a rebound from the recession. But it failed to Budge in August and then retreated in september. The news came just As the government was releasing unemployment statistics that showed that the nations jobless rate Rose from 6.7 percent in october to 6.8 percent. The leading indicators Index is designed to project the Economy six to nine months. In Advance of the report a consensus of analysts had expected the Index to be Little changed. Six of the 11 Forward looking indicators were negative. With few exceptions reports about the state of the Economy from government and private groups have been Bleak in recent weeks following a surge in economic growth during the summer. Another 140,000 americans were added to unemployment Rolls in october As the jobless numbered 8.6 million the labor department said. There Are now 1.8 million More people without jobs than there were when the recession started in july 1990. Factories lost another 32,000 jobs in october on top of a severe 31,000-Job decline in september. Construction jobs plunged by 29,000 last month. The Industry has lost 10 percent of its work Force since May 1990, said Janet Norwood commissioner of the Bureau of labor statistics retail Trade employment fell by 47,000 in october after seasonal adjustment. Hiring for the upcoming Holiday season fell Short at department stores Norwood said bringing total Job losses in that sector to 425,000 since february 1990. Once the most popular governor in modern state history he was Defeated by Roemer in 1987 after repeated investigations of his scandal plagued administrations. He was indicted on racketeering charges in his third term but was acquitted in 1986. Duke who has said his racist past is behind him has garnered widespread support with his platform against race based affirmative action and for welfare Reform. He is also opposed to new taxes. One plaintiff Marilyn Mittan a 43-year-old resident of Barberville Fla., said she began flying for Eastern airlines in 1972 and a started getting sick in 1983.�?� after consulting five doctors she said she was found to be a a hypersensitive to smoke.
