European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - November 25, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday november 25, 1991 the stars and stripes b Page 3workshop helps take sting out of change by Chuck Roberts staff writer Friedberg Germany a change is a constant Way of life for service members in Europe. A sergeant and her family arrive for duty in Germany on monday. The next morning she finds out that her unit is deactivating and that she might be sent Back in the states again in a few months. On wednesday she reads about further Pentagon troop reductions and worries about her future in the army. On thursday the sergeant reads about rampant unemployment in America and wonders if she would have any Chance of finding a Job if she were forced to leave the army. Although the changes she faces Are Many there Are Only two Basic ways to Deal with them according to a change management workshop developed by the army. A a you re either a change victim or a change master a said Barbara Bransford while conducting the workshop before a group of Community leaders at Ray Barracks in Friedberg. A in spite of All the changes that Are going on around you in spite of what happens you can get control of yourself and the Way you Deal with it a she said. A you can either take control of it or you can be a victim. A this shop tells you to let go of stuff that you can to Deal with anymore a said Bransford who is the army Community service director in Friedberg. A this is not the time to Harbor resentment. You be got to move Forward. Instead of saying a i have no control and i am a victim a say a let me see if i can turn this around and see what there is in it that is positive and see what there is that i can its hard to Start that but once they do they will go Bransford and other acs directors give this message to Community leaders so that they can help spread the inform Day manager at the Ray Barracks outreach Center. She said that the wives of soldiers worry about such things As their Cavern shutting Down and their husbands getting kicked out of the army. Eden yield attended the first workshop conducted by Bransford and said the information should be useful to Community leaders. Elspeth Hohnstine said that she has not heard of Many problems resulting in spite of All the changes that Are going on around you in spite of what happens you can get control of yourself and the Way you Deal with a Barbara Bransford Tion throughout their communities. The message needs to get out because the problem is widespread Bransford said. A now everyone is unstable a Bransford said. Many people joined the military and took civilian government jobs because of the Job Security these jobs used to offer. Bransford said that Many soldiers Are afraid of losing their military Job and of not being Able to find a Job in the civilian world. Those Are the kinds of things being heard by Bonnie Edenfield in her Job As from the current changes but that there san atmosphere of stress As the draw Down continues. Hohnstine said she was attending the workshop to help prevent a crisis by knowing what to do and by getting people to the right sources. In Many cases losing a Job also Means losing ones identity Bransford said because in today a society people often Are identified by what their Job is. But people without jobs can to think too negatively about themselves if they Hope to make a pitch to prospective employers. A you Hae to Market and sell yourself a Bransford said. A you can it be Laid Back because there is too much Competition. You have to know your Good qualities. Not rocking the boat is not enough anymore. You have to convince them that you Are Worth a person May not get the Job that they want but Bransford said that they usually can find some sort of Job. A person keeps a Good attitude during changing times by remaining True to oneself Bransford said. A Trust in yourself and you will find a solution a Bransford said. One Way to do that is to make a list of All the Good things or victories that have been achieved in the past. When someone is overwhelmed with change they often become too frightened to remember what they have achieved in the past and what they can achieve in the future. Another Way to help Deal with change is to avoid unnecessary changes. The ability to Cope with change is limited and too much change can Lead to stress Bransford said. The workshop includes a stress test that assigns a Point value to stressful events. Unavoidable events such As the death of a spouse led the list with 86 Points. But other events such As having a new baby or financial problems Are things that a person can have control Over Bransford said.
