European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - December 5, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse The Sauna in Casa i Menandro one of Pompeii s More impressive of Vesuvius Frozen in timely Gary Miller Mediterranean Bureau they were among the last Pompeii residents to fall victim to Vesuvius fury. The Man s final futile Effort was to protect a pregnant woman from falling debris. Two children a one about 2 years old the other 4 or 5 a were found nearby. Six More of Pompeii s residents fell with them some apparently covering their Mouths with cloth to keep out the gases that choked them. Their final moments of life were preserved by the Ash and Stone that concealed them for nearly two millenniums. The 10 skeletons the first human remains found in the ancient italian City in three decades were discovered in late August in a Bank of Ash by workers restoring an area of Pompeii. Their location nearly at the rooftop indicates that the 10 survived Vesuvius initial eruption on aug. 24, 79. They were probably attempting to escape the City and were trapped when the Volcano erupted again according to Baldassare Conticello Pompeii s superintendent of archaeology. Their condition and surroundings suggest that Many of them were crushed by a falling Structure. Scientists created detailed casts of the bodies by injecting Cement and epoxy resin into the cavities left in the Ash by the corpses decomposition. The casts produced by the solution Are far More detailed than those previously made with plaster said Giusseppe Lanziano a member of the Pompeii research staff. While the older casts resemble abstract sculptures those of the recently discovered bodies Are so detailed that what appears to be the Ripples of Robes can be seen. The Public is not Able to View the bodies Lanziano said and May not be Able to for another year or two. He said officials want to leave the bodies where they were found instead of having them moved As has been done in the past. However there is no suitable shelter or display area for them yet and it will take awhile to have one constructed. Casts made of the recently discovered bodies show a Man trying to shield a pregnant woman. Several other Well preserved bodies lie nearby upper right in photo. Casts made of epoxy resin and Cement show the human forms in great detail. December 5, 1991 stripes Magazine 5
