Bureau the sound of children s laughter and shouts is not common in London s Well known West end Heaters where comedies musicals and plays Are usually adult fare not child s play. But at the Unicorn theatre near Leicester Square London s the Terland children make up the bulk of the audience. The Unicorn housed in the arts theatre is the Only professional theater in London s West end that performs children s shows exclusively. Currently playing at the Unicorn is the Meg and Mog show the theater s most popular production. It offers music magic and the silly escapades of a Witch whose spells always go awry. The production staged for the 10th time at the Unicorn ends Jan. 26. The show is based on the characters of Meg the Witch and her friends Mog the cat and owl created in a series of some 14 children s books by Helen Nicoll and Jan Pienkowski. While the Meg and Mog show could be described As an afternoon of just Plain fun some of Unicorn s productions such As the upcoming body talk offer some Light education As Well. In that play which opens feb. 8, video screens in the auditorium will represent two eyes while two groups of actors act out the events taking place inside the body s command module the brain. Founded in 1947, the Unicorn is great Britain s oldest professional theater for children. For 20 years it toured Britain in a Van but in 1967 it moved to its current Home in the arts theatre. Some of its productions Are children s standards such As a musical adaptation of Jungle Book but the Unicorn also commissions works such As its upcoming Hans Christian ande stories. The theater s five play season which runs from september to june coincides with the school year. But because of its audience All performances Are on weekends and school holidays. In its Effort to provide education and involve children in theater the Unicorn offers regular drama workshops to it Unicorn theatre club members.
