Military began setting up tents for the haitians at Guantanamo Bay. The Pentagon said coast guard cutters that had been picking up the refugees at sea had become intolerably overcrowded. Washington up the National Park service has announced a multimillion Dollar plan for improvements for Yosemite National Park without the use of tax dollars. The Park service Hopes the plan will be a Model for renovation at other National Parks. The plan contained in an environmental Impact statement would renovate and reduce lodgings in the California Park increase food services boost transportation and refocus souvenir sales at a total Cost of As much As $150 million Over the next 15 years. I he plan Calls Tor the Park service to regain control of the Yosemite Concession from a subsidiary of Matsushita ltd., the japanese conglomerate whose acquisition of the Concession last year created controversy. Matsushita acquired the Concession As part fits $7 billion takeover of Mca inc., owner of a 30-Ycar Yosemite Concession contract through its Curry co. Subsidiary. Under the plan the National Parks foundation a nonprofit organization controlled by the Federal government will pay Matsushita $62.5 million to buy Back the Concession facilities and contract from Curry when the current contract expires in 1993. The Purchase will be financed by a loan from Matsushita to the foundation. The loan will be paid off using the Parks annual revenues. When Curry a contract expires the foundation will contract with a new concessioner who will pay for the renovation plan through the Park s $85 million in annual Concession revenues. In response to critics of the Matsushita acquisition of the Concession Ridenour conceded the Park service would rather have concessions at National facilities be in the hands of american firms.
