Its just not  Schaefer a senior at Mannheim High school was one of about 130 High school students from five schools in Germany who toured the confinement facility As part of a course called Street Law. The course is offered to department of defense dependents schools students for the first time at Mannheim Patch Stuttgart ans Bach Frankfurt and Kaiserslautern High schools. While each school has its own course Agenda the students Are often brought together for Field trips and other activities. Field trips Are crucial to the course curriculum. In addition to the Mannheim visit students saw exhibits by the army a criminal investigation come from the Frankfurt crime Laboratory. They also saw military police dog demonstrations. Marcos Garcia 17, a Junior at Frankfurt High school disagreed with Schaefer about the facility. A i previously thought prisoners had it too easy a with Access to video recorders television and so on he said. The one semester elective course is designed to improve students self image and their attitude and knowledge about Law and government. It also teaches students about Legal and political systems How the Law affects them How they can affect the Law Legal procedure and the relevance of the Constitution. C. Rich Carroll who teaches Mannheim High schools Street Law course and who coordinated the trip to the correctional facility said the course engages students in the a Community of Law that governs us  he said text and supplements contain exercises that place students in roles As defendants plaintiffs judges prosecutors and arresting officers. To increase Contact Between students and local military and Host nation Law enforcement officials the course features guest speakers and trips to courts martial and German courts Carroll said. A the greatest benefits of the Street Law course being offered in a school include High interest student entered subject matter Broad application in the High school social studies curriculum. And an excellent Opportunity to integrate Community resources with school curriculum a Carroll said. Schaefer said the course should help As she pursues a career in air Force Law enforcement. A i figured this course would give me the basics a said Schaefer who leaves for Basic training this month. A it would teach me not Only military Law but civilian  in her own Community teen agers will Benefit from the course Schaefer said and had it started earlier a your crime rate would be a lot  attributing juvenile wrongdoings to idleness Schaefer said a we sit around the housing area. We Are not allowed to have parties not allowed to do this or that. In the end when we did do something and tried to stand up for ourselves wed get in trouble. At the time we did no to know what rights we had so we had to Swallow it. A now we be Learned a Little bit More about the Community about what we can do and we Are going to Start doing something about it. Its a Good course. They should have started it a Long time ago a she said. Garcia said he was impressed with the course because a a it a Law that could happen to anybody Law of the streets everyday  american Law enforcement officials recently have received substantial Media attention from reports of overcrowded prisons to unfounded beatings of suspects. While some students believe Many americans May have lost Faith in the Law enforcement system most students still believe in a Blue  Limor Henderson a Sophomore at Frankfurt considers them Safe. Student opinion varied about the confinement facility and policemen in general but Schaefer said students Are not naive about what prison is really like. A some were saying a i could do something and it would be of because id still get my food and even get paid for being there a a she said after the tour. Military prisoners Are paid $40 a month for incidentals. A but in be been to a German jail a Schaefer said. A a students realize they Are living like Kings Here a she said of the Mannheim facility. A but anywhere on the outside you get treated like trash. You get treated exactly like what you did wrong and that a the Way it should  Schaefer believes military Law enforcement personnel Are restricted in their jobs. A personally i think military cops Are too lenient. They done to have enough jurisdiction. They can to even write you a ticket for $5. They cannot punish you for a crime. And if you Are on the commanders Good Side its much easier to get off than in the civilian world. Something needs to be done about it a she said. Garcia a general impression of policemen is Good he said. A they have a very Tough Job. The majority of the time they do what they have to do to get the Job done. Its sad that the few bad cops that we do have Mark a name for All our  the stars and stripes a Page 9 education educators dare class to say no to drug use Naples Italy a the Naples elementary school recently conducted its second annual sixth Grade dare drug abuse resistance education graduation. Air Force Security policeman sgt. Tracy Palmer dare officer for the school conducted the ceremony. Several senior Post officials attended. Having witnessed the devastating effect drug use has had on the careers and performance of adults the speakers expressed encouragement for this Early intervention program which promotes a better educated generation of dig free youth and adults. Students were presented with certificates of achievement for completing the  reunion set Munich Germany a the University of Maryland a Munich Campus is planning a two week Celebration in Honor of its move to Augsburg this summer. Munich a Mcgraw Kaseric which has been Home to the Campus for the 42 years it has been in Europe is closing As part of the draw Down of . Forces in Europe. University officials said that when news of the developments spread to 18,000 Munich Campus students around the world there was a ground swell of interest in getting together to celebrate what had been and to find out future plans. A there will be a grand reunion for students staff and faculty a said Dean William Mcmahon. A events which Are suitable for All groups both singly and in combinations arc scheduled for the first two weeks in May.�?�. Group travel is being arranged from several Gateway cities in the United states. Accommodations have been reserved in local Munich hotels As Well As in the Munich american guest House. Proposed activities will include symposiums on key events featuring major speakers mixers at some of the old haunts special Tours both near and far a super Field Day a raft ride and a Bonfire by the Isar River. There will be a formal dinner May 8 and a commencement ceremony May 9. Activities have been planned every Day from May 4 to 15. All students staff and faculty past and present Are invited to attend.
